$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'H')ey Miki, welcome to Peak Oil. :)

I admire your coolness and the generosity of your arguments, your defense of common sense and decency. It has to be very difficult to speak reasonably and quietly in the face of ignorance and hatred.

Thanks for the compliment Pstarr. I have not always managed to speak quietly though :). I do try my best, as I think disrespect only leads to more disrespect and no constructive discussion. However, some people around here would get on Mother Theresa's nerves. Imagine how much they can get on my nerves, considering that my people have been the main victim in all this situation.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')merica has an agenda to protect it's interests in the Mid East and Israel is the chosen device. I blame the people of Israel and the US for being smug, lazy, and disinterested in the evil perpetuated in their names. I blame the assassins and bombers on the other side for murder.

I completely agree.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') would like to know more about the ME. What journals, histories, and thinkers would you recommend?

Hmmm...I'm not the best person to ask. I did not go to high school here and I attended an American university in Beirut, so I did not really learn much about Arabic literature. I did take a course on the history of medieval civilization, and we reviewed the classic texts of some famous medieaval Arabic philosophers, such as Al Ghazali and his contributions to the understanding of worldview of Sufism (a mystical branch within Islam).

Islamic art is facinating as well, particularly their architecture and decorations. Just take a look at the Alhamra Palace in Grenade or the Taj Mahal. There are tons of books written on the topic too.

I can tell you much more about Lebanon, as I know the most about our country. Had you asked me this a month ago, I'd have invited you to come over. There is so much to see and do in Lebanon. Here are some links:

-The Phoenician culture is very interesting. They were awesome sailors and traders and they were known all around the Mediterranean. Interestingly, most Lebanese today (Muslims and Christians) still have the genetic markers of the Phoenicians rather than those of the Arabs. Also, to this day Lebanese are still world known for their trade and entrepeneurial talent. Many of the CEOs of some of the most successful businesses in the world are Lebanese or of Lebanese decent.

-Lebanon is a very interesting society with a mix of Eastern and Western influences and many different relgious and ethnic groups. We also have the best beaches and night life in the ME, and the country is small enough for one to go from snowy mountains to the beach or shopping areas in less than 2 hours. Our cuisine is one of the bests in the world, and we also have some of the most gorgeous women you'll ever see :).
