The earth is only so big, so if peak oil is thought of as a scam now, who cares? Maybe when LA, Phoenix and Dallas merge as one giant megacity from the all the sprawl someone will notice.
People who are trying to dispel PO, IMHO, are only looking at the short term, the little picture. The big picture is this: We are growing our population too fast. We live in a throw away society where everything is used once, then chucked in the trash. I love the graphic from
www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net: Economy + oil = garbage
Where do you stop building? When suburbia from the east coast meets the west in one megapolis? When do you stop using cars instead of walking? When there is complete gridlock from LA to Atlanta? When do you stop going to Cosco to buy 12 years worth of cheese only to throw it away later because you had a heart attack or it spoiled?
Where does this insanity end? Peak oil, maybe, but IMHO, if we in the unlikely event develop some magic silver bullet to replace oil, there will be another day when we run out of it, too. We will debates here, online, about "peak solar" (every roof is completely stuffed with solar panels), or "peak biodiesel"(every inch of land is converted to grain production). This lifestyle we have right now ain't gonna work forever!
I see that, now after being in the matrix for so long. *This* is what we need to tell people, to convince. PO may not bring armegeddon, but something else will, eventually. We need to relearn how to live as humans, not some fattie jabba the hutts driving around in our barges.
I think we should stop debating so much about PO and just learn to conserve, practice sensible reproduction and respect our planet, because sooner or later Mother Nature is going to be on the rag and kick our ass if we don't.
