Before you get too depressed, you should maybe read this thread where all your questions were thoroughly discussed and you will see that much of what pstarr said above is either an exaggeration or outright lie.

You definitely live in another dimension than me, pal.

When I come to this board it seems more and more like another dimension.

In my world restaurants and diners are packed, stores are packed and shelves are full.
RE is going at a record sales and price pace.
In my industry of oil and gas people are losing their jobs because there is a glut of both.
Refineries are shutting down.
Rigs are not drilling. There is TOO much oil and gas.

Then I come on here and read about everything being the complete opposite of what is occuring outside my own house. Talk about a mind f%#k.


I think I'll take a break from here for awhile. Maybe when crude goes over $100 again I'll come back.
I know it will happen and I don't mean that I'm denying peak oil by any of what I said above but it sure isn't happening now.

I've become a believer in the Pickens plan, not because I am a fan of fossil fuels, but because it's perhaps the least objectionable backstop we have. Certainly better than shale or CTL, and much cheaper than electrifying transport (barring EESTOR of course). While it has technical challenges, it's simply the best we've got as a bridge technology.

While I'd certainly like to see our dependence on long-distance trucking and the personal auto to go away, it's not going to happen overnight. We need an insurance policy because nothing is going to change until we indeed have a crisis. NG can come online in a triage situation to keep the supermarket store shelves filled.

Solar, wind power and a whole bunch of other things are also subsidized by the government. One could also make the argument that petroleum-fueled suburbia has been subsidized by the government.

At any rate, you might not be able to travel from SLC to Reno on a CNG vehicle right now, but if you look at the map in the link, and also check out location of CNG stations around Las Vegas and SoCal, you'd see it's a breeze to travel from SLC to Los Angeles with a CNG vehicle. That's probably a more common destination anyway. In time, the route from SLC to Reno will become traversable, too.

Why run anything on natural gas? What's the point of converting our horribly inefficient car-based infrastructure to something that will only postpone the inevitable? Why does everyone need a car?

Why not get around town in small electric cars and spend the money to get trains and busses running between towns?
