Might work if the Gubmint used the Tax to actually pay off the debt. But what always happens is they just use the money for some other useless scam instead. At least that is what happened in Canada. Under the Liberals and Trudeau in Canada, a special 10cents per litre tax was put in place to pay for the National Oil Company PetroCan. That is about 45 cents per gal. The Nationalization of the Oil Patch went bust, PetroTrash was sold off, but the Special Tax still Remains. The Gift That Keeps On Giving.

Canada has a VAT Tax as well on all Goods and Services. The Funds were supposed to be applied directly on Canada's massive Total Public Debt. It never happened. The Funds collected was just plowed into General Revenue's and they kept borrowing and spending even more. Now everything you buy and every service you use is Taxed another 5% on top of all other Taxes. It is the last Tax applied at the end. So now even a man living in a cardboard box under the overpass, even if he has no income, a bum. Pays TAXES as soon as he buys something. Even if he is living off others spare change. If they killed all other TAXES and completely replaced it with the VAT it would probably be OK. But they never give up a Tax once they get it going. They just swallow that money and demand more.
