$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('KaiserJeep', 'T')he purpose of Memorial Day is to remember those who gave their lives to preserve our country and way of life. We all swore this oath:
I, <name>, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."
(Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).
...and on that day we honor those that died upholding the oath. So please do not bicker over politics. For the record, I am never happy on Memorial Day, I have a tradition of military service in my family, and a Great Uncle still on engine room watch on USS Arizona.
Not to be picky, but that is not the oath I took. Officers have a different oath. You will notice it removes the clause about obeying orders. Officers are expected NOT to obey orders under certain circumstances, our loyalties are pledged to the constitution.
Here was my Oath:

having been appointed
a (rank) in the United States
Air Force, do solemnly swear
(or affirm) that I will support
and defend the Constitution of

and allegiance to the same;
that I take this obligation
freely, without any mental
reservation or purpose of
evasion; and that I will well
and faithfully discharge the
duties of the office upon
which I am about to enter. So
help me God.”
