Interesting. In a market of permanently rising fuel prices, investing
in gas futures could be another scheme for uber-rich to float their
money on gas as a commodity while other peoples money in the
bank keeps going down?

Or do you think this a sign that gas prices are headed down? :lol:

"It's natural to increase investors' choices by bringing out a gasoline
fund," said John Hyland, the firm's chief investment officer. "We're not
suggesting it's a hot fuel and worth investing in at this point. We just
feel that over the long-run, gasoline is a major commodity and it
deserves representation."

Along with oil, natural gas and heating oil, gasoline is one of the four
major energy commodities traded in the U.S.

..."Innovation is at the core of the Amex identity and UGA,
the first fund to follow gasoline, is a welcome addition to our
product lineup," said Scott Ebner, senior vice president of Amex's
ETF marketplace in a statement.

I since a new direction for the US economy: ETFs (exchange traded funds).

We've outsourced everything, and what we couldn't outsource, we insourced to outsiders. One of the few things that remains is financial services, and we can now place bets on our own demise!

DBA = starvation
USO = peak oil
GLD = inflation
UGA = gas lines and shortages

Investors Business Daily

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')EW YORK, Feb 26, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Victoria Bay Asset Management, LLC and the American Stock Exchange(R) (Amex(R)) today announced the launch of trading in the United States Gasoline Fund, LP under the ticker symbol "UGA."

The investment objective of UGA is to have the changes in percentage terms of the units' net asset value reflect the changes in percentage terms of the price of gasoline, as measured by the changes in the price of the futures contract on unleaded gasoline (also known as reformulated gasoline blendstock for oxygen blending, or "RBOB," for delivery to the New York harbor), as traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange that is the near month contract to expire, except when the near month contract is within two weeks of expiration, in which case it will be measured by the futures contract that is the next month contract to expire, less UGA's expenses.

Beware of contango. In simple terms, if the futures contract for the next few months are higher than the futures contract soonest to expire, it will be unfavorable to invest in this ETF - all other factors being equal. Generally this would mean selling the ETF in late winter and buying in mid-summer.

This is not an investment recomendation, and the price of the ETF may rise to overcome the effects of contango - but it may be best to wait until at least early summer to venture in to this one.

uber-rich? yup that sounds like a title worthy of me... too bad my investment portfolio only qualifies for "uber-rich" status when measured in terms of the zimbabwe dollar

BTW might not learned much about finance in school (took the wrong major), but if the goal is to be uber-rich, I guess its possible to follow in the footsteps of anna nicole smith and other "gold digger" investors. If I not mistaken their motto/mantra is "ya can marry more money in five minutes, than you can make in a lifetime!"

What's a TLA?
Peak oil is not an energy crisis. It is a liquid fuel crisis.

Having anything to do with investment probably turns you into an evil capitalist-jew-bolshevik who creates inflation by dropping dollar bags from black helicopters because you hate "permaculture" and 9/11 was an inside job. Or something like that.

Don't worry about him. Most people around here are pretty insane, as you'll notice if you stay for a while.

PS. And everyone is going to starve to death.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'but if the goal is to be uber-rich,')

My goal is to use information to make sure that what I made sitting those long hours in the office does not evaporate due to no action on my part. :) If in the process I become "uber-rich" so much the better.

PO site offers so much good info on what to expect and how to react that it would be shear stupidity not to use this info.
