Thanks for the link PMS. I'll check it out at work as I don't have a fast enough connection out here in the sticks to listen to it now.

I wish I could listen to Bill Frisell and Lenny Breau at work! Let me know what you think when you do hear it.

Funk Brothers, yes. Used to spend my high school spare time playing along with Marvin Gaye's Super Hits. Jamerson was the baddest bassist! Great sound - more like an upright than most bass guitarists. He was an upright player originally, Fender set up their basses in the 50s/60s with a bridge cover with foam packed on the inside, so the strings would be muted and sound like the bass fiddle. Everyone else ripped the things off but Jamerson kept it on. They'd written articles about him by the time I was learning (mid 80s) so I made my own mutes.

I notice YouTube has videos of Breau playing with both Chet Atkins and Tal Farlow, who was another jazz great.

Did you guys bother with that vid I posted of Jimmy Bryant? According to Barney Kessel, "Jimmy Bryant is the fastest and the cleanest, and has more technique than any other guitarist."

I'm a Sonny Sharrock fan too. Like John McLaughlin he was more of a cranked amps guy though.

Yeah, there's a lot of music lovers around here. I know I'm one of them. Maybe we can make this into the new music thread. So we just keep it going and the music goes round and round until the grocery stores are empty and we have to rely on what we've stored. Then we play acoustic
Of course there won't be any amplifiers.

I used to have a 65 Fender Jaguar that had mutes on it. It wasn't my thing at the time but I do remember it being there.

Do you still play music these days Dude?

These are great sessions but for the best experience, check out the documentary "The Genius of Lenny Breau". Sorry I don't have any more info than that at this time. It was made by his daughter and has some great interviews with Pat Metheny, George Benson, Chet Atkins, and many others.

I saw one video of the Mahavishnu sessions or part of it, I don't remember exactly. He was impressive and very free and open. Lots of chromatisicm and atonal violent passeges. I find him to be a very aggressive player. I've not heard much more than that admittidly but I would agree; he is a monster talent.

Back in the early 90's, I worked at Hasting's in Oklahoma. There was this local guitarist named Edgar Cruz we use to play whenever he cut a cd. I saw him live a few times in college. Unbelievable.

I've posted a lot about the restaurant where I used to work. There was an old chap who used to play the accordion every Friday night. He was a good unknown musician. There's lots of good unknown musical artists. That's just the way it is. Guys and gals who studied hard and mastered the craft and now eke out a subsistence life trying to make a go of it. Most give up and go do something like driving a forklift. As I said, that's just the way it is. I would hope that Carlhole won't mind if I broaden this idea for a thread.

You guys ever listen to Acid Jazz? It's pretty easy to get ahold of some good Acid Jazz compilations.

You know, I am really fascinated by some of the Acid Jazz grooves, but they seem to fall a bit short of perfection. It's almost like a genre that hasn't quite matured yet (like Heavy Metal circa 1970).

I think it's because Acid Jazz don't have a lot of super-cool solos - just short songs. Acid Jazz gets the sex right and it gets the funk right but it doesn't swim up into higher atmospheres. And I notice that modern grooves never seem to sport a musical bridge. And they never do things like switch keys, something that Steely Dan was never afraid to do - and, for me, that makes Acid Jazz sound less imaginative than it could be if it went all the way. But the raw material of it is solid. Download some and check it out.

The Dave Holland Quartet reference reminded me of Charles Mingus

btw, keeping a thread alive in the OF is not as easy as it is in the HOF.

Here's some more vintage Mingus

Found a '62 Jag in a shop, late 80's. My high school band played Satyricon in Portland a week after Nirvana did, Cobain made Jags and Jazzmasters hip. Always like those unusual Fender/Gibson axes.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')o you still play music these days Dude?

Oh yeah. Just Irish trad. Play the uilleann bagpipes (also called the Irish organ - really fancy and complex woodwind), fiddle, flute/piccolo. Irish music is kinda bluesy - especially the pipes. Or blues is Irishy - there's a chicken/egg thing going on there. Irish music is melodically simple but you can improv a lot if you're playing solo, which is most all of what I do.

Got into Irish via English folkrock guitarist Richard Thompson, who is amazing - one of those two guys playing at once types. Richard Thompson - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning.

These guys were always my favorite jazzy rock band: Minutemen - This Ain't No Picnic. They were a political/punk band too - sense of humour as well - that's Reagan strafing them!

I found my Jag to be a bit of a disappointment. I picked it up at a music shop for $500 after working all summer for it. Basically it was not a strat so it lacked the simplistic beauty that a strat has. The bridge components were really sloppy and the elevation of the strings changed, intonation was a pain to get bang on. The pickups were a tad weak. Basically what you'd expect from a much cheaper axe.

I have several friends that are incredible players of this style of music. Although I don't have any on CD, I enjoy hearing this stuff live even moreso than blues, which can bore me.

I hate to see this thread sink beneath the waves, but it probably will anyway. The OF has been opened back up to the public. It's obvious that a lot of unregistered visitors were going to the HOF music thread because they liked it. So perhaps this could be the swan song for peakoil.com music threads. And how many of you ever heard of Garnett Mimms? Did you, Carlhole?

I started this thread so that people would actually share some tunes they thought were good. I have a whole bunch of music but just happened to have these on my drive to upload.

I did get some Bill Frisell playing with Brad Holland yesterday but haven't listened to it yet. I can probably find those others you mentioned as well. here's a video from the Supreme Beings of Leisure.
