My gross display of materialism and selfishness

Needed 2 bolts for a project I'm finishing up. Simple 3/8x8" bolts, nothing fancy. Said to Hell with it. Put my buck sizty ass in my Expedition and drove the 10 or so miles to Home Depot. Picked up my 2 bolts, 4 washers and 2 nuts, hopped back in my mammoth tank of the suburbs and drove home.

It may be wasteful, but damn its nice. 8)

Forgot to add, total cost for the supplies? $2.48. Chances are, I spent more in gas to get there and back then I did for the stuff I needed!

It is fun, isn't it?

Perhaps that's the core of the problem. Using resources is fun - and using even more is a greater delight.

The only thing wrong with your trip is that you didn't use the drive-through at the local fast food place! 8)

Or take a drive around town for no reason other than to look at the pretty buildings...

Also more fun to ski down a hill, or roll down a hill (remember doing that when you were a kid?) than to walk back up again.

All this illustrates is, 'tis easier to participate in entropy than in its opposite.

As long as we're hardwired for that, we're doomed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')ll this illustrates is, 'tis easier to participate in entropy than in its opposite.

Its not really that we're hardwired for it - its just the lwas of physics and the way things are. It takes more energy to put things in order than it does to put things out of order, and usually more time.

Its far more rewarding/fun to utterly smash up a room than to tidy it up afterwards. I dont think the Who would have been considered Rock n Roll if they had went about tidying hotel rooms, making guitars and assembling TV's...

Its more to do with laziness. Sitting on your arse on a comfy chair in a warm room watching tv, drinking beer and eating pizza that has been brought to your door is far more appealing than cowering in a cold cave eating insects and looking for firewood.

Although i think the modern way of life can be soul destroying, it does have areas which are good. We really need to find a balance - (why is it always the way?) A middle road option - using some of our modern technologies and comforts, but adapting them to run with less energy.

Of course, this can never happen with capitalism, so as long as capitalism is around you can forget it. I dont think a mass political movement exists that would cater to the type of society i would like.
