Movie: "National Treasure" starring Nicholas Cage

Unread postby Oilgood » Wed 01 Dec 2004, 22:47:23

You might have seen a new movie called "National Treasure" starring Nicholas Cage. I'm not going to say the movie was good/bad/okay, but there was something about it that I found....curious. For instance, there is a scene where Nicholas Cage's character does a toast "to high treason". Conisdering the current political climate in the US (Patriot Acts, Iraq war, Northcom etc), I was wondering if there was some deliberately subversive and veiled message in this movie, or is it just my imagination?

I think you're schizophrenic. haha, j/k. To tell you the truth, that would be awesome if it was. But, it was probably just thrown in there for comic relief. But you know, that part could be considered a subtle message couldn't it? Hmm...well if the guy from Con Air tells us to rebel against our government, I guess we have to do what he says.

Well, that wasn't the only part. Cage's character (the hero of the story) also quotes that thing I think Thomas Jefferson said about how the people should overthrow the government if it gets too authoritarian in another scene.
More on the Toast scene: Cage's character is with a man and a woman at a fancy party, and says something along the lines of "a toast to high treason". The man and woman look taken aback. Cage goes on "the founding fathers were actually committing high treason against Britain, and if they had lost the war for independence they would have been hanged". Mind you these are not his exact words, but this is the gist of what he says, and what he says is as intersting as what he seems to almost be saying....
Also, keep in mind that the whole movie is basically about decoding veiled and secret messages in order to find treasure. I don't know, the movie does seem to be a little bit unusual, but is it really an implied Hollywood protest against the current situation of the US or just meaningless entertainment?

Don't forget that it was also a Jerry Bruckheimer production. Not likely to have any deep meaning but lots of special effects.
