Mouse damaged finger

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Wed 27 Jul 2005, 13:48:13

The index finger on my right hand, the one that I use to click the mouse buttons, is stiff and sore. I gave up playing Ms Pac Man years ago because working the old joy sticks had damaged my wrist. Now there's new damage as a result of computer use. I am trying to develope the habit of using both the index finger and the middle finger for pushing the mouse buttons. Hopefully that will help. (once I damaged my shoulder playing tennis. When I used to swim competitively, it was always my joints that gave out. Seems to be my weakest link)

Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

If it's carpel tunnel try vitamin B-6...

If it's joint pain try glucosamine/condroiten (?speeeling?)...However, don't use glucosamine if you have any type of diabetis or are alergic to shellfish.

It's really annoying at first, but you should try switching mouse hands. Works pretty well for web surfing and has the side benefit of making you learn to use the keyboard shortcuts more since mousing becomes a bit more work.

Try & develop a lighter touch on the mouse & keyboard.

Also make sure you have wrist support.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

You could try using a large trackball, they are quite cheap now and you can use any part of the hand to move the ball and to click. I find one great

Were you around the other night (or early morning for you) for stupid_monkeys short-lived thread? I recall Free, Albente, stupid_monkey and myself making some posts before it bit the dust (rightly so! :-D ).

It was funny, zentric. You were reading it? PB, stupic_monkey was up to some stupid monkey tricks and started a thread with porn links. Albente called it an experiment knowing that the mods would have to delete it. And of course they did. It reminded me of the old TV show in the sixties called Turn On with Tim Conway. One episode and they cancelled it. Has cult status as a Trivial Pursuit question now.

Yes, it was funny and got funnier as it went along. Some things you can be overt about, knowing full well that it won't stand. Other things you can be subtle about, hoping it will.

Like Albente, I didn't see the end of that thread. If it had been during the School Year I wouldn't have seen any of it since I have to get my sleep and be up early in the morning. Ah, the Three Virtues of Education: June, July and August. Up late at night and sleeping in in the morning!

I remember as a kid in Germany one of the childrens books we had was called "Stuwelpeter", where this kid just would not cooperate, not cut his hair and do all sorts of other things that his parents wouldn't tolerate . Looking back I find it quite fascinating how crude the graphics were. The original certainly goes back to the 1800's.

Anyway, if the finger hurts, Penultimate, cut it off!

I sit at my computer keyboard/mouse with my elbows *lower* than my wrists like the piano player Glenn Gould, it' works great! Not a trace of carpel tunnel problems and I spend hours a day on the comp.

Here's what I did to minimize repetitive strain problems:

I've always been left-handed with the mouse and right-handed with the trackball and trackpad. Using the mouse only, started to cause wrist pain.

So I added a trackball to my setup and placed it on the right. I can switch back and forth between mouse & trackpad without changing any connections or making any other effort.

At the first sign of unpleasantness in one hand, I switch to using the other device with the other hand. If I know I'm in for a long session of writing or whatnot, I switch back and forth any time I think of it, as a preventive.

The modern tendency toward mice sprouting as many buttons as keyboards have keys, should also be resisted because it causes more "reaching" with the fingers whilst the palm of the hand remains stationary on the device: an obvious cause of strain & pain. I can do fine with one or two mousebuttons on Mac, and two on Windows, and of course none on command-line *ix systems.

Also beware "ergonomic" products; not all are created equal, and not all are suitable for every user. Try before you buy. Simple is good.
