I've been extremely fortunate. After a few years of mucking around with meds that provided bad side effects or simply didn't work, I've gotten to the point of having good quality of life on the least meds. I'm just working with my GP, not a psychiatrist. My GP is very interested in using the least meds. Since I usually have a very low-stress life, this is possible for me. If I were trying to live a "normal" life of job, kids, etc, I think I would be either heavily sedated (and hence not able to work) or a screaming loon.
Have you ever taken Kepra? When I awakened from the coma I was in five years ago, the neurosurgeon put me on Kepra (for seizures, he said). When my family doctor looked it up in her PDR, she was quit shocked and said its an anti-depressant and anti-psychotic. I didn't like the way it made me feel and eventually quit taking it (prior to the neurosurgeons consent) but in retrospect, nothing bothered me; life sure was less stressful. (Of course, my wife said "maybe you're not anxious when you should be anxious).
I was really, really angry after the brain surgery.
edited to say I got a letter last year from the neurosurgeon saying he was going into homeopathic medicine, were I to need his services. Big switch.
