Its a real apples to orange comparison between an SUV and a Model T Ford. If you have seen a Model T you realize that its quite a light vehicle. Top speed about 40 m.p.h. On steep hills they had to be driven up in reverse!

I happen to have a '41 Chevrolet Master Deluxe. A much more comparable vehicle. It could get about 23 m.p.g. on the highway with its 95 HP, 3.5 litre "stove bolt" six cylinder engine and weighed in more like a present day SUV, about 3,400 lbs. Top speed was about 60 m.p.h. , but the owners manual does not recommend steady running at theat speed, 50 m.p.h. is what it recommended. It lacked full oil pressure bearings on its connecting rod bearings, it used splashers, but a modication to that same 6 cylinder motor in 1952 would give it 115 HP, allowing a higher RPM. I understand that engine was the most prolific built, Chevrolet built approximately 17 million of them beetween 1938 and 1952.
