The reason I have to make that commute is because of the profession I chose, the career opportunities available, the lifestyle I want to lead, the specific experience I have that makes my specialty more lucrative than others in my field, but the locations at which I can work are limited.

It's a "whole package" thing. I'm not willing to live in a crappy little town when there is an extraordinarily amazing city 30 minutes away. I want my children to make friends with the people in the city, not in the crappy little town where there's nothing to do. There are no services, the people are not interesting, the natural beauty is just as far away from the crappy little town as it is from the great city.

The larger town where I would work is a mecca of mental illness and crime for many reasons. Surprise surprise, it's also the reason I would go there to work. There is no way I want my children growing up there. If I could find a little place on a couple acres in the middle I'd think about it, but I'm not sure that's what I want either. I want my kids to make friends with people, not chickens. I know I'm not going to get everything I want out of this so something has to go. I guess I'm going to have a long, expensive commute. It just can't be done on a bicycle.

I'm very pro-bicycle, so this kind of sucks for me. I'm just going to try to get a Honda CRX or something like that and have it tricked out for mileage instead of speed. Oh well.
