Kurt Vonnegut: Fossil Fuel Cold Turkey

Unread postby wisconsin_cur » Tue 26 Feb 2008, 08:57:30

This has probably been mentioned before but I found it for the first time and thought I would pass it on.

Cold Turkey

The last lines:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ere’s what I think the truth is: We are all addicts of fossil fuels in a state of denial, about to face cold turkey.

And like so many addicts about to face cold turkey, our leaders are now committing violent crimes to get what little is left of what we’re hooked on.

Kurt Vonnegut is a hero of some of my cornicopian family and friends so this is a good info source for those that I talk to about peak oil.

I do not accept the term "addiction" when it comes to a resource. To say we are addicted to oil is the same as saying we are addicted to steel, silicon, and latex. They are just the tools we currently use to do the things we want to do, which we may be addicted to, such as driving fast, gambling on the internet, and having sex.

But you cannot say we are addicted to latex, since latex is not the only way to have sex. Similarly, steel is not the only way to drive fast and silicon is not the only way to gamble.

Even Bush said Americans are addicted to oil. Of course, if you are referring to a narrow clinical definition, you may be right. In a larger, more encompassing view, our lifestyles are heavily dependent on oil; indeed, it would be difficult to deny the vast majority of Americans and a high percentage of other G7 citizens are hooked.

On this subject, I highly recommend this Oil Drum article, let me know your thoughts on it (and anyone else's thoughts, for that matter).

but oddly, oil is the only way to get steel, latex, and silicon.

In the context of Vonnegut's editorial, his addiction statement makes as much or more more sense than ahything else I've heard or read in the past several years, particularly in the mainstream media.

I have a copy of that quote pinned to the wall in my business for the public's edification.

Why do we need to nitpick over semantics about one of the most eloquent people of our time?

There are more remarkable statements in this article. I just adored this old man. Rest in peace, K. V.

Yeah, K. V. He smoked cigarettes right into his 80s. Clearly he detested them and regretted his addiction. Given our current situation, I don't expect to make it to 80.
