Who is this Max singer guy from the Hudson institute? He suggests the world could easily acheive 200 mpd of oil production in 2020:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')If there is to be enough oil in 2020 without an increase in the share coming from the Gulf, the rest of the world will have to add roughly 100-120 million barrels a day of gross new production by then (including both replacements for existing and new wells as their production falls and programs to get more oil from old fields). But there is probably almost 200 million barrels a day potentially available by 2020 outside the Gulf. This includes up to 40 million barrels a day in the former Soviet Union (more than half in Russia and the rest in the countries of the Caspian Basin), 40 million barrels a day of unconventional oil from Canada and Venezuela, another 45 million barrels a day from the western hemisphere, mostly offshore, 25 million barrels a day from West Africa, and 40 million barrels a day from the rest of the world. Of course none of these totals will be reached; the world doesn't need that much oil, and investors won't drill for more oil than is needed.

PLease tell me institutes like this have no influence with the US government, this guys information is more insane than the EIA's and USGS!! :lol:

Interesting.

His article seems to revolve around a huge faith in the technology of oil discovery and extraction. The fact that he emphasises Canada has more reserves than Saudi Arabia, even though it is non-conventional oil, seems to be the main base for his point of view.

Personally I know very little about the technology involved in extracting oil from shale and oil sands but if he's right when he talks about it only costing $15 a barrel then PO will be delayed by a few decades.

Of course I know nothing about the EROEI of these processes but it is something worthy of discussion.

As I undertand it sands and shale have a really bad EROEI, if this is the case how come it only costs $15 a barrel? Surely it would be a lot more expensive than this?

Also shale and sands need a lot of water and natural gas, which limits its potential production.

Currently the Alberta Tar Sands (a better name than oil sands) are producing 1 million bpd using both digging and steam injection. They predict that they'll be able to raise production to 2 mbpd by 2010, but the problem is huge. They're using natural gas to heat the water and that resource is also on a down slope in North America.

There is some talk of building a nuke plant to create the needed steam for the injection method. It seems to me this would be the only way to raise production to the projected levels.

guh all those "alternative" oils are basically unformed oils, and we have to perform the processes the earth would normally have done. Its extremely wasteful, extremely polluting and produces shitty oil lol. I don't see 200 mbd anywhere, ME or no. Russia is practically at the brim, barring a massive find in Siberia. Just about every country, outside the ME, is in decline.

I read in a ASPO bulletin that the tars were formed by bacterial agents "eating" the oil before we could get to it. Damn those bacteria!

The article is over a year old. It has no effect within our disposable media culture. Wait till another one comes up and then stomp on it.

lol the tars are the leftovers after a field was pumped dry of the easy stuff! that's basically what remains in a field after the liquidy stuff is gone.

damn bacteria is right.
