It'll last as long as they have money /political power to throw at it because they are going about it wrong and will never win. Their tactics are just fertilising the problem.

Hope failed when they couldn't deliver on their promises. Remember when we were all going to lead a life of leisure while robots and nuclear power did the work?

The Neocons are children of the Cold War. The military-industrial complex needed the Cold War because WW2 ended. The Cold War was great, they think they won it, but it ended, they need a sequel. Cue Cold War II: The War on Terror. Same plot, bigger special effects, more explosions, more camel chases.
Hitler came to power because having lost WW1 he wouldn't stop fighting. The US wins two wars and won't stop fighting.

Yes it would be sane if terrorism were the real impetus to war. But I don't think it is. The real cause is Peak Oil. And it isn't exactly a blood bath, not if you compare it to Viet Nam or Korea or WWII. Looks like we got our base in Iraq fairly cheaply by historical standards. The American elite class has a plan, it seems. I wonder if the falling oil prices are connected some how. Any really good geostrategists in this forum who can help us to see the Big Picture?This would be sane.
