How much Tight gas is in production, currently?

Unread postby nth » Mon 27 Mar 2006, 17:29:10

I am wondering how much tight gas fields are in production.
There are lots of new technology to increase tight gas production. They are talking about doubling the gas output or more.

I heard the United States has an estimated 225 trillion cubic feet of tight gas. Is this true? If yes, is this in place or recoverable?
I believe this number includes non-discovered fields, but I maybe wrong.

I got the following information from a publication put out by IFP (Institute Francais Petroliere)

In the US the EIA estimates tight gas sand resources at ~ 400 trillion cubic metres of which 7 trillion cubic metres is technically recoverable currently. In Canada the NEB estimates tight sand gas resources anywhere from 2.5 to 42 trillion cubic metres. Production of tight gas sands began in the 1970's in the US and is currently at a rate of 100 billion cubic metres per year. There are 40,000 wells producing from tight gas sands .......1600 reservoirs in 900 fields.

Thanks.

The question then becomes will they be able to produce fast enough for US consumption?

I'd say the truly important questions are:

1) Are they enough to offset peak oil?
2) How long are these reserves going to last?

My understanding is that tight gas by its nature is not under high pressure and can be thought of as "seeping out", lasting a long time, but not providing high pressure rates.

It's one of the reasons why you see companies going nuts drilling all over the place, they need a lot of wells drilled to make up for the lower pressure.

Here in Alberta tight gas exploration and drilling is really moving into warp speed.

1) This is not going to contribute to oil at all. US and Canada do not use much oil for electricity and industrial use. Even petrochem only takes up to 200kpd. gas is only good for electricity and according to many people including Exxon thinks we have hit Peak Gas.

2)Tight gas lasts forever due to the fact that we cannot get them out fast enough for our use.

Yeah, people are coming up with different ways to expand production. It looks like there is a lot of tight gas.
