PeakOil is You

PeakOil is You

How do you decide what the truth is

What's on your mind?

I get the point Pogma is making but it could apply to any group, not just environmentalists. Statistics are always open to interpretation, people can always exagerate (can't spell, sorry, I'm not English). From that viewpoint surely truth is subjective.

That should not be the case. Mathematics are a pure science. If mathematics are correctly applied then there is no room whatsoever for interpretation. That also goes for statistics.

If you are in a room with 253 people there is a 50% likelihood that you share your birthday with one of them. That is a truth. It is only when you start translating that truth in more ambiguous terms that you get in trouble.

One might say: "There is a change that you share your birthday with one of them"

Another might say: "It is very likely that you will share your birthday with one of them"

That's two opinions which are both more or less true, but they heavily influence the way you think about the subject. That is the 'fluidity' of the truth that you perceive when reading the news. If they left it at the 50% there would be no room for debate.

Some of that fluidity is willingly added to press a certain agenda, or a belief. That doesn't mean that there is no truth behind it. It is just obscured by the people who relay the truth.

Therefore in finding the truth one has to go down to the bare facts and strip it from all the comments, interpretations or other additions that have been made.

I'm suggesting that TRUTH is "any coherent aspect of reality".
Saying truth is subjective implies it's all just a game of opinions and whoever's opinion is more colourful/forceful has merit.

A=A isn't subjective, it's the basic code to truth and knowledge.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')here are also gross exaggerations, such as forests depleted by 20xx without any data to support it.
I think that members of greenpeace should just come out and say..."look I don't want to work, I just can't stand a honest days work".

You'll notice them chaining themselves to trees, protesting the development of Unit complexes, all the while collecting the dole from those building the units.

Well, I don't know what the actual numbers are but I know that the pictures of where the rainforests used to be are pretty ugly. And while I don't know EXACTLY how quickly it's happening I'm pretty sure it's fast.

However, I finally have something to agree with you on Pogma. I hate seeing people running around protesting stupid crap that usually makes NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL. As I'm busting my ass 8-10 hours a day I wonder "How do these people live?". For example, where I live there's these two morons protesting the arrest of Mark Emery. Mark was charged with trafficking after lighting a joint and passing it to a friend at some legalization protest or something. He gets 90 days in jail. Personally, I agree. That sucks. But every day for the last 2 months these guys have been sitting across from the courthouse (where every cop in saskatoon goes EVERY DAY) advertising to the world that they're a bunch of potheads..........real bright boys, right after the gov't scrapped the decriminalization bill to. Everyday I see them and just think "God damn you. Get a job." And I actually smoke dope..........and thats why you all should listen to me. :D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('elgayna', ''')There are no "facts". There is only information in a slice of time.'

My limited brainpower worked that one out as well, but not everyone seems to agree LOL

Bit ironic that my question itself was open to interpretation, I meant to ask how do YOU decide what the truth is. I already decided that there is no such thing as 'the truth' for myself, but wondered how other people felt.

Right and there is no such thing as words, just noises people make.

The law of the excluded middle states that a statement is either true or false and cannot be both. So I make a statement such as "I exist", now this is either true or false. Either I exist or I don't. Wittgenstein wondered if all philosophy was reducable to the tilde. :) If you really want to find out if there is such a thing as the truth throw yourself off a tall building, flapping your arms and see if you can fly. (And no, I don't want you to really do it. I believe!)

Good one Matrium.
Now listen, here's how it works.....you or any envirocrazed group you represent posts details of an expected depletion date, you then back that up with the maths, IOW you show evidence of a potential depletion date rather than use PHOTOGRAPHS of LOGGING as emotional blackmail to suit your lazy agenda, the agenda of unemployment and guilt transfer.

Allright dipshit (guess I gotta send this to the HoF) enough. Guess what? I don't give a fuck how successful you are. I work 3 jobs to support myself and my daughter and the last thing I need is some piece of shit who thinks he knows me, telling me what my "agenda" is. You don't know shit.

One thing I am not is an environmentalist, I have concerns for the environment, but am not delusional enough to think that anything I can do will make a bit of difference. Like I said, I don't know the numbers concerned with deforestation, because I haven't really looked into it. However whether they cook the books or not, the fact is we're cutting our forests down and we're not replacing them. I don't know the rate I just know it's happening.

If looking at logging photos is making you feel guilty, perhaps you have other issues you should deal with. I know I didn't cut the damn forest down so I have no issues with guilt, and I don't suppose you cut them down either.

Oh yeah and you can think whatever you like about my "habits", if I gave a shit what you thought about it I wouldn't have said it. I work, support my family, and pay my bills. If I want to smoke a joint at the end of the day I bloody well will.

Whether the habit is bad or not is a matter of opinion, hasn't put me in the poorhouse as of yet so.....

I suppose you have no problems with getting shit-faced at the bar though right?

P.S. sorry for ruining your thread Elgayna.

On the matter of truth, I think it's just a matter of discernment. Truth is out there, sometimes it's just hard to recognize. The idea is to question everything, try to come at each subject from all angles. It can be tough, but in the end you can only believe what you feel is right.

One lesson I've learned is that if something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

Anyway thats my 2 pennies, figured I should say something on-topic

OH HO HO AHHAHAAHHA, I should have come here yrs ago, I'm having fits of belly laughing back here mate.
Matrim....I'll try and explain the basics to you once more{just for fun, LOL}....of course you care how successful I am, in fact you probably resent it....and the evidence is in your response, I mean look at the size and ferocity of it, it's obvious that you want to be successful, but are held back by fear and laziness.
Well I'm sorry, I wasn't lazy, and it paid off....incidently, I worked 6 days a week from the age of 17, it's not my fault that YOU decided to go into debt on non-appreciating assets, or worse still, spent it all on toxic substances.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')ike I said, I don't know the numbers concerned with deforestation, because I haven't really looked into it. However whether they cook the books or not, the fact is we're cutting our forests down and we're not replacing them. I don't know the rate I just know it's happening.

Knucklehead, if you haven't really looked into it, don't know the numbers, and presumably don't know why numbers are important, well you should stand mute.....you're an embarrassment to critical thinking.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f looking at logging photos is making you feel guilty, perhaps you have other issues you should deal with. I know I didn't cut the damn forest down so I have no issues with guilt, and I don't suppose you cut them down either.

I don't feel guilty for maximizing my life....but without evidence, {and evidence in this case must be backed by the maths}..., what are you using as a guide to the TRUTH about deforestation?
Errmmm, don't tell me it's a gut feeling, LOLOLOLOL

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')h yeah and you can think whatever you like about my "habits", if I gave a shit what you thought about it I wouldn't have said it. I work, support my family, and pay my bills. If I want to smoke a joint at the end of the day I bloody well will.

There are many paths self-destructive individuals can take...I guess it's better than your type scratching my cars :D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hether the habit is bad or not is a matter of opinion, hasn't put me in the poorhouse as of yet so.....

Noooo, IMO, one of the best area's to invest in housing in Australia* is in Logan City{just outside Brisbane}....the weekly cost is something like $90-$110 after all expenses...now have you done something similar, have you investigated the various houses in your vicinity?.....or are you blowing your spare dough into the atmosphere?

*the east coast of Australia has the best growth potential IMO, and also, this coming decade will be the last time people, professional or otherwise, will be able to afford additional properties as the next boom will place housing out of their reach.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') suppose you have no problems with getting shit-faced at the bar though right?

I'm not a big drinker tbh+ I prefer to stay in shape.

Ok Pogma, let me explain something to you.

You have presumed correctly that I don't really like you, but it has nothing to do with your "success". For one thing I have no idea if you actually are successful. Subsequently, you also have no idea how successful I am. I'm not going to go into every detail of my life just for you. What I will say is that yes I have looked into local real estate, and in fact I'm opening up a store in a couple of months. Again I state, you don't know shit. Have fun in your office job, taking shit from your boss though, I hope you feel successful. I'll work for myself thanks.

And you can call me lazy all you want, but I probably work harder than you do, and I still have fun to.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'i')t's not my fault that YOU decided to go into debt on non-appreciating assets, or worse still, spent it all on toxic substances.

Actually I don't have any debt. Again you assume things based solely on your own narrow view of the world (although I did sadly waste waaaay to much time on toxic substances a few years back, but hey, live and learn).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'K')nucklehead, if you haven't really looked into it, don't know the numbers, and presumably don't know why numbers are important, well you should stand mute.....you're an embarrassment to critical thinking.

When you're stating the obvious direct facts aren't needed. I could find them, but you wouldn't listen. I think it's pretty obvious that our forests ARE being depleted. To deny that this IS happening is just ignorant. If you want to claim that the supposed rate of depletion is bogus, fine. You may be right, I don't really know (I have a hunch you ARE right about that) But deny that it's happening at all?? Thats just stupid.

Not to mention, I haven't seen one post from you that I could classify as critical thinking. You have provided no basis for any of your arguments whatsoever. In this thread you claimed to have offered content to the author.....well I looked into it, all you offered was derision. And that was even before I piped in, so I guess we know why you're here: to be an ass.

If you were actually interested in meaningful debate, you would search, and hope for a way around peak oil, while making plans. If the peak comes I will........ If the peak doesn't come I will..........

I suspect you have no plan at all for if peak oil happens (which has to be a distinct possibility even if you think we can avoid it), which will leave you fucked if it does, all the success in the world will be meaningless to you if society DOES collapse. I think it's prudent to have a backup plan don't you? I guess not.

I for one know exactly what I will do in either case.

Anywho I think I'm done responding to you, if you have anything meaningful to say past this point maybe I'll join in, but it seems likely you'll just insist that I must be an unemployed environmentalist who's scared to work. If that's the case don't expect another response, I've given you enough fun at my expense.

Peace[/quote]

LOLOLOL, all anyone wants is for you envirofascists to back up your claims, and at this point YOU HAVE OFFERED NOTHING to support YOUR opinion that we're depleting our forests...IOW, you offered coffee table chit chat and tried passing it off as something factual and urgent.

And how can I say anthing about depletion rates when they don't exist, no org has done the necessary audit to know one way or the other.

So stop being both lazy and stupid, either find the numbers{I DEFY anyone to do this}, or stand mute.

I'm sure you find it amusing trying to make people feel guilty, but without evidence, NO-ONE will take you seriously.

Ok you two cut it out. If you want to start a flame war do it in the hall of flames.

I am not denying that we're messing up the planet. And the environmental organizations have every right to say so. However it does matter how you bring that message. Right now I've got the feeling that the environmental organizations think that their cause is so important everything is allowed, even manipulation of the truth.

It is good to show a picture of a deforestated area. People should know what the effects of deforestation are and it is a truth. The proof is there for everyone to see.

On the other hand I also saw a story on a site about CO2 and global warming. Accompanying the article was a picture of the cooling towers a nuclear powerplant. Of course the billowing steam from the towers looks pretty impressive, but it has nothing to do with CO2. In other words placing the picture there is manipulation of the truth.

My final objection against many of these organizations is the commercialisation of activism. Most people are not aware that Greenpeace is a company. Although the lower echelons consist of volunteers, the higher levels are not only payed, but payed more when Greenpeace becomes more successful.

The late David McTaggart the former CEO became a multi-millionaire by running greenpeace. Mending the truth suddenly becomes profitable when more people join. One has to wonder where the environment fits in.

This becomes apparent when talking about personal issues. Right now the message appears to be: send us your money, and we'll teach those big bad companies.

However we all have a responsibility to the environment. We all have a responsibility to reduce our waste, our energy usage, our footprint on the planet. However this message does not go down well with the general public and might cost them donations. Therefore companies like Greenpeace are very careful not to criticize the general public on their behavior.

Principals are thus exchanged for marketing strategies.

I'm wondering how many on this thread can agree that the best way to deal with drizzle is to ignore it and carry on with the work ?

Elgayna - the truth we can know is relative truth so called. It reflects the extent of the info we have and the degree of our integration and comprehension of that info.

No one can give you absolute truth: like everyone else you just have to make your own judgements form the info you gather. As you test them against new info they evolve and with luck will give you a sound basis for deciding how you want to contribute to resolving this mess.

So have some faith in your own judgements !

Because of your generous use of the Caps lock key, I was just assuming that you were a bit upset. :)

About data. The data is there undeniable unless you accuse NASA of forging their pictures.
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Librar ... ion_2.html

Some of the organizations use this information thruthfully.
http://www.bsrsi.msu.edu/rfrc/deforestation.html

Others write some emotional story and make it appear like the rainforest is gone tomorrow. To that I object

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')ncient forests are the living expression of billions of years of evolution. Home to millions of types of plants and animals, they sustain as much as 90 per cent of the world's land-based species - everything from owls to orchids and bears to beetles.

And every two seconds, an area of ancient forest the size of a football pitch is destroyed.

These forests, and the indigenous people who rely on them, can never be replaced. And the beautiful plants and animals that live there are not all we stand to lose. Illegal and destructive deforestation also produces high amounts of carbon, heating up the earth's atmosphere and accelerating climate change. And the lands of many indigenous peoples are being destroyed by deforestation - their resources plundered and their cultural traditions threatened.

I'm sorry to hear that you consider yourself unsuccesfull. Judging by the modern standards of ambition I would probably be unsuccesfull too since I don't posses a car, a morgage or an espresso machine.

However I have been carefull never to enter the rat race. Instead I chose science. And I'm very pleased with the way my life turned out.

And in the end that is the only type of succes that really matters, to be proud of what you have done and to be happy with what you are. (and that is a fundamental truth :P )
