$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sirrom', 'i') just wanted to see how you all found out about Peak Oil so that i can get a better idea of how to spread the word about the impending doom.

For me, it was when i was bored one day,so i typed 'when the oil runs out' into google
Along the way my search also included many questions like yours "'when the oil runs out' into google"...

And welcome to club sirrom, have fun spreading word of the impending doom!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mmasters', '
')Hey, you saying I'm one of those wacky "conspiracy theorists"?

Nah. You might be all sorts of wacky, but I'm not sayin' it! :)

I used to read Mike's site all the time. He had good PO stuff there, but his slant on other issues (and that persecution complex he seemed to have) I disagreed with.

I had the idea in the 90's just because, but always figured 2020. In the late 90's I picked up a copy of Popular Science/Mechanics (can't remember which). They detailed the stats on world discovery falling below demand around 2010. I dialed into it more extensively after that. I think LATOC might have been one of the first PO sites I visited. I trolled this site for awhile before I posted anything.

I saw a tiny mico-article in Rolling Stone about the LATOC website, and a bit more about Kuntsler, and The Long Emergency book. I went and checked out the LATOC site, I think I sat in front of the computer all night, just following links and reading about peak oil nonstop. I spent the next 3-6 months reading all I could about everything peal oil related, and eventually decided all I could do was to start to prepare as best I could, so, I switched my reading to gardening, survival, homesteading, type of stuff, and here we are now///

I had a strong impression back in the '70's that we were withing a few decades of running into resource limits. But my recent intro was an interview with Kunstler in a local paper. I ran out and got his book, then Heinbergs, and it was all down the hole from there.

Even though he may go overboard on some of his doomerism, it sounds like Kunstler's been pretty important for a lot of people's awareness here!

I had a rabbit to cook one evening and wasn't sure how to joint it and by the kind of wonderful serendipity that is the internet's strength, I ended up here. As my post count shows, I don't contribute much but I read PO everyday and I am inordinately grateful both to this site and to theoildrum for removing the scales.

Our high school chemistry teacher, Mr Agerter, worked for the oil industry before teaching high school.

Mr Agerter told our chemistry class about peak oil in 1955 or 1956.

Acceleration of slope of oil production may have gone from + to - in about 1956.

Any comments ... or corrections for septuagenian senior citizen attempting to do differential calculus?

Guys.

I was on sabbatical leave a UI champaign in computer science in 1972-3 when the first gas crunch hit.

And just went to work for Sandia Labs in 1980 when the Iraq\Iran war started.

Me dad always picks up current science books that I borrow, so he had Deffeyes' book a few years back.

So, I read it, tried to find flaws in the facts... couldn't! Oh oh. Started to get worried, checked the internet and then was stunned to learn that the situation is potentially even more serious.

Read about the world starting to run out of oil in the Science/Technology supplement of the World Book encyclopedias, 1978 edition, when I was 7. Tender young age for a doomer! Early 21st century was the prognosis. We'd have to switch to fuel cells, or electric cars. Duh...ok. All through the 80s/90s I'd tell people we'll start to run out of oil in a few decades, and they'd think I was nuts, it was like saying we're going to drain the Pacific ocean.

Read the Population Bomb back when, too - always figured they were close to the truth. Came across the dieoff.org website about 6 years back, and read a Long Emergency excerpt a few years ago - also heard Jim on NPR, talking to Terry Gross I think. "Fresh Air" indeed. His book really got me hooked.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sirrom', '
')so how did you find out about it?

Why, someone told me about it the day it happened of course. Thanksgiving, 2005.

In utter hysteria over having started my preparations too late, I went a bit overboard, if I had known that we would be going YEARS without anyone noticing I would have taken more time preparing my anti-zombie defenses, ticked off the wife I did compressing the entire affair into 6 months.

Now, as I sit around with my pile of ammo, guns and MRE's with horded gasoline and gold bullion in the basement, I wonder if I didn't go a bit overboard, or if the gasoline will go bad while I wait around for the Gorge to kick in.

I hear ya PD. Pretty much did the same thing myself. Dropped a huge amount of my personal savings preping up. I still spend quite a bit. lol You can always think of something else you just might need or another book on something you might need to know.

To the OP. I was browsing on the net checking out the big avian bird flu scare. I came to this doomer website that was all about repent and crap and was about to close it when I saw a list of links on the left. Meteors, Yellowstone and such, and it had Peak Oil as one of them. Being as I work in the oil field I was like whats this? It took me straight to LATOC. Needless to say couple days later after lots of coffee late nights and ungodly amount of cigs. OH SHIT !!! was I could think.

I first heard of Peak Oil in an interview with the band Corrosion of Conformity (whose logo is my avatar). I'm not sure if the site was mentioned in the interview, but LATOC is the first place I read some more in-depth about the subject. Found this forum right after... I think it was back in '04/'05

thanks for all the reply's.

it appears that most of you found out about peak oil while doing your own research for something or you heard about it in an interview.

now i just need to think about how to get people to do thier own research into peak oil, which is probably quite hard.

Point out how it happened 2 years ago now, and then point out how traffic jams are obviously fewer and farther between, SUV's sales are slowing, unemployment is up 0.1% recently, South Dakota had all those gasoline shortages which are to be expected in a post peak world, and the looming demise of suburbia ( home foreclosers ) are happening just as some of the Prophets have predicted.

Seems to me its all quite obvious...shouldn't be hard to get friends to notice.

Heard it mentioned a few times in the late nineties - thought it was just about oil not being available forever. A few years ago - there was a reference to it in a book I read, but I still didn't know all the details - like how urgent it was. For some reason, I had it in my head that this was a theory for maybe 2040 or something. Then my husband/boyfriend watched a documentary about Cuba and mentioned peak oil to me.

As I just became more and more aware that this type of lifestyle just isn't sustainable and feels wrong, I kept looking for sustainable communities. I could just feel the impending doom ahead, but didn't know what it was going to be.

Then I came across The Long Emergency.

Flu wiki, a great site for caring and giving but not much on the dark side of killing and getting. When the discussion turned to home security it was suggested that I might want to visit the gun thread.
