New members- Tell us about yourselves

Postby threadbear » Sat 30 Jul 2005, 23:13:44

I just want to take the time to thank new members for logging on and sharing their opinions and knowledge with us. The quality of the forum improves when you post.

Let's try to add more grist for the mill here and flush out some lurkers. Don't be shy. You don't have to be brilliant and spell reel purdy, you just have to be genuine and have an opinion.

My name is John. Father of 4 living in Michigan. Background is US Naval Academy and aviation..... sailed the SoPac for three years on a 32 ft sailboat. Interested in PO... but still not completely convinced it will happen w/in the next ten years. Enjoy economics/finance and looking at PO from that perspective.

Candyman, I dunno if I'd recommend putting your entire name online. Maybe just go with your first name.

Hey John, first its not good to give yor real name on these bordes We are watched. Some times I fear policy follows it.

Fixed. I'd hate for someones identity to be stolen from our site
You observed it from the start
Now you’re a million miles apart
As we bleed another nation
So you can watch you favorite station
Now you eyes pop out your sockets
Dirty hands and empty pockets
Who? You!

There are several bits of information one should never post on any board; particularly a potentially controversial board such as PO.
Among them are:

1. Occupation, unless given in very general terms,
2. Name,
3. DOB,
4. SSN,
5. Address,
6. Family details.

I'm sure there are other items better left unposted but the items on the above list are keys which can unlock a view into every other detail of your life and nothing good can ever come from that.

(edit) * And I would be a bit wary of anyone constantly posting details regarding their occupation.

This has been your free tip for today.

no longer a lurker

Postby aflatoxin » Sun 31 Jul 2005, 04:00:33

I am truly a new member. Lurked for over a year tho.

I am an environmental consultant. Specifically, I measure stack emissions from a huge number of stationary sources used by the oil and gas industry. I've probably visited 60% of the pipeline, refinery, power plant, and natural gas production facilities in the western US over the past 15 years.

My professional life revolves around the combustion of fossil fuels (plus the occasional nerve agent incenerator and a tree-bark fired boiler or two)

What about phone numbers?

Like I said, there are other things too such as license plates, phone numbers and probably a long list of other useful key bits of info.

The point is, use common sense when posting precise details.

If you live in a secret beach commune in the far east, have never held a job, or had any government license of any kind; Never had a bank account, never registered for school or had a SS#. Never had a phone or passport in your name, never joined a church, or the BoyScouts...

AND NEVER LOG ON TO THE INTERNET EXCEPT AT PUBLIC TERMINALS...

Then you might be safe from ID manipulation.

Otherwise...

Your ID is not secure, no matter what else you do.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I think some of the above is a bit paranoid.

I'm proud to be a member of PO.com The only reason I post under my own name was I was too dim to think up a cool screen name. But I don't think the PTB are going to catch me and throw me in a dungeon just because I speculate about issues on a website.

On PO I am "out in the open" and tell people in RL about it.

If TSHTF they'll (TPTB) have far more urgent problems to deal with.

Cheers

I think of PO.com as a Declaration.

And I'm proud to place my own John Hancock here in big, legible lettering.

Do I fear some possible retribution? Maybe a little.

My greatest fear however, is turning my back on the countless sacrifices made by brave people around the world & through time, from which I issue.

We are all gonna die... some quite horribly...

I get to do it saving the world... (or at least trying)

And when I balance these fears on the scale of my own morality, I can only come to one decision:

I'm Aaron Dunlap from Houston Texas...

This is my life; my family, my country & my world. Despite all our shortcomings, I love you all, and am honored to face the wolves at our door.

To introduce myself...

I'm a 19 year old physics student from Ontario Canada. I have only been PO-aware for a few months, after I googled the term after hearing someone use it("peak oil"). I know almost nothing about economics because I find it superficial as a subject of study but it's becoming apparent to me now how relevant it is in order to have an understanding of politics, trade, PO, etc.

I also hope to do some travelling before it becomes prohibitively expensive...

I'm also a 19 year old student. I study Japanese and I'm hoping I'll still be able to go abroad next year as planned. Even before I heard of PO I was planning to live more simply, become more self-sufficient, etc. This just makes me speed things up a bit. Prepping from a dorm room is a bit harder than than if I had a house/apartment, but I welcome the challenge. Sometimes all the possible ramifications of PO scare me to death, but others times I look around - at all the new "walled communities" and pricey developments going up in my town, the stuff-a-holic people, the housewives complaining about their water bill going up because they have to keep their lawns perfect in this heat - and think...bring it on!
