:-D

Greetings all, I just signed up a short time ago and I'm here to learn virtually anything you guys are speaking about.
I'm a 16 year old Australian High school student who is interested in Economics and peak oil and thus I arrive to you.
I also think I should probably learn as much as possible as I'll probably spend most of my life in a post peak oil lifestyle.

Welcome, you'll notice a strong US bias on many topics but this is a global website so you will get international balance. Many issues will affect countries differently, for example Australia needs to concern itself with long distance travel problems and water. Don't take everything on this site verbatum, consider how the issues will affect your own location.

Hello - and a question re: posting

Postby SilentE » Wed 28 Sep 2005, 14:34:51

Hi all! Good forums with some very knowledgeable folks here. I'm more of an optomist myself - I've recently been spotted in the Michael Lynch thread arguing that maybe we won't peak within 10 years... :-D

Question:
Is there a time limit on how quicklyyou can post?

Actually - I know there is because I got a message to that effect yesterday! But I couldn't find out how the time limit (post limit?) worked, and I couldn't ask because... well, I couldn't post !

So how does it work?

Thanks!

We are having some problems getting the 2 new servers to sync or some such - I made a post yesterday that was time stamped 4 hours after I actually posted it and I had to go outside and work (of all things) for 4 hours till I could post again.

Seems to be better today. Usually it's only a few minutes between posts.

That explains it then - my post was time-stamped about 16 hours ahead! That also put it out of order in the thread - there's a reply to it that quotes my text, but that appears before it!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('bobcousins', 'A')ccording to some doomers the fabric of space and time itself starts to fall apart at the Peak, perhaps this is what is happening?

Sorry about this guys... should be fixed now.

We just get so distracted rolling around in petrodollars and shopping at Walmart...

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Right-o I'll keep that in mind, I'm of course very concerned for my future as I don't really know all the details of what will happen here in Oz as peakoil arrives, I'll probably post a topic in one of the forums asked for advice soon too.

Hello...

Postby Renfield » Mon 03 Oct 2005, 11:16:21

New to this board. I have been aware of the problems with energy now for about two years and have already been through the shock, depression, acceptance phases of energy awareness. I am now moving into the "what are we gona do about it" phase on both a personal level and as it relates to what we as a country and world may do to mitigate the problem. I am currently stuck between a rock and a hardplace as far as advocating market solutions and government preemption because I know market solutions will be tough but government intervention tends to be stupid as our current level of subsidization of ethenol shows.

Anyhoo, I have been discussing this issue a lot on my own message board here: http://www.necroticobsession.com/bb/index.php?c=21

But for the most part people there aren't as informed and don't want to discuss it much so I need a place to vent and this looks like the right place. Hope to get to know you al and I look forward to some informed discussion and debate. :-D

Renfield -

welcome to the site.

Your observation on the toughness of market solutions and stupidities of government pre-emption is widely discussed here - mostly without much recognition that both corporatism and nationalism are the twin drivers of the problems we face.

Hoping your posts may explore areas beyond this duo,

regards,

New Dutch Member :-)

Postby bl00k » Mon 03 Oct 2005, 17:41:33

Hi, thought i'd introduce myself before participating in discussions on the board ;).

But anyway, i'm dutch, 17 years old and thrilled to learn as much as possible here until, as you guys say so nicely, The Shit Hits The Fan :P. I'm optimistic on every aspect of life though i try to keep it real. I hope to meet more dutch people here since i have absolutely never heard anyone talking about (or even suggesting, for that matter) peak oil. And i don't think it's up to me to inform everybody about this because i'm largely known as the funny guy and it's hard for me to be taken seriously, but i won't bore you with my problems ;).

cheers

Welcome

It all depends on how you present it to people. I have been experimenting with different "peak oil message" delivery methods and am starting to get one that works.

Asking people if they have heard of peak oil almost always gets a no and when trying to change someone's mind you should avoid the word no like the plague. Get them saying yes.

So I ask them open ended questions about sustainability and current state of affaires. Then I present the peak concept, but I try to make it look like they already know about it.

<sarcastic remark> I am not telling them anything new, no not at all. When dealing with the delusional, you have to feed the delusion and their own inflated sense of self worth. </sarcastic remark>

This approach works. It allows me to discuss the concept with complete strangers and they actually spend a few moments thinking about it. When I would just ask people if they had heard of peak oil, and then proceeded to explain the concept, people would almost immediately jump into a denial and technofix mind set.

The Netherlands are great, I really enjoyed my trip there. What an incredible place to be! You have such an incredibly diverse (migrant ? tourist ? transitory ?) group of people in Amsterdam. Really quite an opportunity to change world opinion simply by walking down the street and talking to strangers.

Auctionmonster, did you try to translate `When the Shit hits the Fan` in Dutch? :)

Because ´hoop ik dat u veel voor de crapklappen kunt leren de ventilator´ does not make ANY sense at all :-D

Nice try though :)
