Grave of the Fireflies: a great movie

Unread postby theshadypeach » Fri 07 Jan 2005, 02:17:55

I have just recently viewed the Grave of the Fireflies, and I have to say, it's the most tragic film I have ever watched. The most surprising part is that it's only a cartoon 8O . Never expected to be so touched by a medium usually geared towards children.

The story is about the suffering of two children living in Japan near the end of World War II, when the Americans were firebombing japan. Kind of shows how, no matter how righteous a war is, there will always be collateral damage and innocents suffering.

check it out and tell me what you think of it.

Well its Anime, which is a bit more mature than cartoons :)

And yes, it is one of the best movies ever.

Cried like a baby... required viewing IMO
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

The reason I like this story is because it provides us the story of various victims, not only the big heroes and soldiers who fought and won the war, but the small people who are forgotten by history, but deserve to be remembered.

Can anyone recommend any good war movie which lends any great insight (focusing on either combatants or non-combatants). No rambo please, although it is entertaining :-D

cheers.

i thought the mel gibson vietnam film was really good. we were soldiers.

the good, the bad, and the ugly. not really a war movie per say but it does show a lot of the raw human side of the civil war.

full metal jacket.

i know i saw gallipoli but i can't remember it anymore.

apocalypse now.

the three kings - set in last iraq/american conflict, very good. fairly recent.

Hmm, 'Cold Mountain' did a fairly good job of that I thought.

'Stalingrad' also was quite poignant and moving.
