Getting Around: How do you do it?

Unread postby Lokutus » Fri 03 Mar 2006, 14:28:39

I still have a car which I don't use all that much. Before moving last year, I put about 1500 miles per month on it. Now it's about 300 miles.

I've been renting Foyles War from Netflix which is an English TV series about a police detective during the early days of WW2. In one episode you see this beautiful old steam train which you just want to ride on. I have ridden trains a number of times in my life and enjoyed the experience immensely everytime. This includes the bullit train in Japan. ("Welcome to our Shinkanshan.")

There's just something soothing about gliding along on rails. I hope that Peak OIl brings trains back.

For work: electric Tram, bus, and/or walk
For pleasure: walk
Long distance: train

Going to buy a bicycle next month so I can get to my farm property faster. I can take a bus for the first 25 km now and walk, but I prefer to take a bike with me and get there sooner... 10km with a bike through the forest - pure pleasure...

I used to cycle a lot but haven't over the past few years. My waist line now shows it.

I have seen two of these eGo Cycles around my town lately. They are very cool little electric scooters.

Personal life:

Anything within a 25 kilometer radius I walk or cycle. Beyond that I take the public transport (bus/train). I am also very good in hitching rides with others.

Work:

Within 200 miles I take a company car, beyond that I take an airplane.

You actually walk 50 klicks at a time (round trip)?

Bring back the train? I commute by train everyday, have done for the last seven years! I'm living the future! Come on in, the waters fine.

Or maybe not in the US where the term "public transport" is a term of abuse, but hey, that's not my problem.

I use the train when it's too far to walk. I personally detest buses. I expect trams will make a comeback, and once the crash happens, they'll start building them like there's no tomorrow (the plans are already there, they just need to be implemented).

Even with Sydney's problems, I'd rather catch the train than drive (even if I could). Even when it means standing on a plaform for an hour.

I guess it helps if you're a gunzel...

As for myself, I either walk, bicycle, or (rarely) take the bus.

The thing about the U.S. is that it is very pedestrian UNfriendly. I expect that to change...not to long from now. 8)

I haven't gotten a drivers licence yet, and with the way things are going down in the world now, wonder if I should even bother.

To get to class I bike.

For longer distances over 2 miles I either take the bus or use the subway. We have a decent subway system in the bay area, the so called BART Bay Area Rapid Transit. So far we've been experencing fare hikes.

KM,

I know where your hinting... it's a bit irritating when ones car gets about the same MPG as one's bike. Oh I'm sure there are valid reasons for this, but one would think if a car weighing around 900 k can get 43 mpg, a motorcycle weighing 1/4 as much powered by an engine 1/3 the size would get far, far better mileage. But it apparently doesn't work that way, darn it anyhow.

I get around by motorcycle when weather permits, which is most of the year.

They can. They just can't do the quarter mile in 10.3 sec @ 144 mph, or go from 0-100 mph in 5.3 seconds like a Suzuki Hayabusa GSXR1300.

Look at what cycles Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki sell in the Indonesian and African markets. Far different from what they sell in the American market.

We can't even get Honda and Toyota to sell their amazing European Diesels here. American environmental regulations prevent it.

Well, yes, almost. I know of one highly modded Insight that will get near 70 at constant highway speeds.

Scooters far outshine cars in total cost of ownership. The cost of insurance, tires, batteries, oil, antifreeze, breakdowns/repairs, spare parts, time spent in traffic jams, etc. etc. add up to many times the maintenance costs of a car.

Not to mention the experience is much, much better than sitting in a car. Except in the rain but nothings perfect (some scooters have roofs).

the electric bike issue has a problem or two: if gasoline is unavailable for one's car, then the economy would be falling apart woudn't it? So what good would an electric bike do? In my situation, I have to drive to a different school every day. If I can't get gas, then neither can anyone else. Also, if everybody has to go electric for transportation, where is all this electricity going to come from? So the question is, should I fork out a thousand or so for an electric bike?
