This is scary. Think when massive Wal-Mart layoffs begin and people have nothing to do but sit home...and mate!

Were screwed...its that simple :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')endy and Fletcher Turner of Port Orange admit it. They say they were stuck at home with no electricity and ended up having a kid.

Well, seems funny at first sight, but it will be problematic especially if access to contraceptive/sexual education is limited.

Life in USA/EU/China could be similar to Africa

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hink when massive Wal-Mart layoffs begin and people have nothing to do but sit home...and mate!

It is funny, but true. When the dot-com went boom in the Valley in '01
a whole lot of people had nothing better to do for a few years. As a result
next couple years the hospitals in the bay area had to put
beds in the corridors to accommodate all baby dot-com boomers.
Kind of counter-intuitive, but this actually contributed to
even higher energy consumption and pushed the prices of
homes even higher since many people started looking to move from
rentals to homes due to increased family size.

Nature works sometimes in really convoluted ways.

Cheers,

For many it takes the threat of a disease -- like AIDS.

Hey, that's how we reduce the population growth. Invent some horrible, lethal, and birth-defect causing disease (though the real threat is small or imaginary) that is transmitted through unprotected sex. :)

Or, maybe we make the threat real and likely instead.

Snip, snip -- problem permanently solved.

My Dad remarked yesterday that I might have deprived the world of a great mind. I might also have spawned a ward of the state. There's no guarantees, and I have no regrets. (I can always "borrow" nieces for a weekend. :-)

<rant>But procreation rights is the Holy Grail of human rights. You can't touch it. I went so far as to suggest that an ecovillage have a "one woman, one child" policy, and was nearly booted out over it! This from a group of people who think they're pursuing sustainability!</rant>

To me, it appears we have about 5 billion excess people for our steady-state energy budget.

Soylent Green was food. I think the more likely scenario is Soylent Green will be fuel. Why do you think they're pushing thermal depolymerization so hard! What happens with turkey guts can also happen to poor, fat people. The rich will continue to have SUVs, fueled by the procreating poor.
