$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('greenworm', 'W')hat are the legal ramifications on building a better siphoning device solely for this purpose and advertising it as such?

You need to get an alpha dog and tie it to your car, the assailant probably sang along to your car alarm while he/she perpetrated the act.

I can hear it now.

"Eh, eh eh, beep, beep, beep, whooo, whooo, whooo." That should be enough gas, I am out of here.

Hmmmm

I'm sure the advertising could feign some other sort of use. What is it that stores say bongs are really supposed to be used for again? Kind of a similar situation. I'm also thinking of those gadgets that prevent police radar from working on you when you're speeding....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tyler_JC', 'W')hy would anyone steal a $10,000 car for what, $100 worth of gas?

Do the math. When gas gets to $10/gallon you might have $300 of gas in a car.

At $50/gallon you might have $1500(!) of gas sitting in your car, whispering "steal me" to those who didn't have the money or were unwilling to wait five hours in line to buy the small amount of gas that was available.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Troyboy1208', 'M')y car has a 13 gallon tank and my neighbors ford Excursions gas tank is big enough to put my car in it. Why they didnt siphon his gas is a mystery to me. He does keep the outside of his house lit up like the Las Vegas strip. Maybe thats why.

Because a person with a hybrid is less likely to have a gun than a person with an Excursion... or a least that's what they were thinking.

Edit: how about this... put some kind of sign on the gas cap that states "You are being video taped" and or "Owner is armed". Assuming they speak English of course.

I think we are still far from the advanced gas thieves. We may get to a point where a locking gas cap is a minor annoyance.

I know that chlorine is one of the worst substances you can put into your gas tank. If you could somehow trick the thieves into stealing a gas tank laced with chlorine, perhaps the entire engine of whatever they are using the gas for will break down. That would be sweet justice.

Troyboy,

Honda hybrids civics have the same shape and make as non-hybrid civics.

Have you considered removing the "HYBRID" label from the back of your car? Just WB40 and a fishing line and some patience (10 mins) should do the job. You may want to remove the "CIVIC" label as well. Inconspicuous methods may minimize such incidents more (especially if they want your car for the mileage!)

Is your hybrid civic the older (2001) chassis or the newer (2006) one?

*sigh*

I guess they'll learn the hard way. My hybrid is constantly in a mess with a litter of figure 12 targets with holes, claybirds, fake ducks, empty brass and shot shells, cleaning kits...

Could you rig a high pitch annoying alarm to a gas cap?

Leave bait for the gas thieves. Use a 5 gallon gas can 4 gallon water one gallon gas. It will smell like gas if they check. They will get a little ways down the road before the car stops running. It will not do any real damage.

Except the cost to drain the fuel tank and lines.

I would get locking gas cap's now. Last time the cost of fuel was this high they were hard to get.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tyler_JC', 'W')hy would any[s]one[/s] rational person who accepts peak oil and that high gas prices and shortages are the inevitable result of our way of life steal a $10,000 car for what, $100 worth of gas?

Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees...

FIXED.

Think of how many teenagers nowadays steal cars just to joy ride in them and then abandon them on some back road. By most people's estimations the enjoyment the teens get from driving the stolen cars is probably worth less than the cars they steal. And yet, still they leave them abandoned. Do you really think that similar behavior wont occur on a wider scale with gasoline being the ultimate goal, and not some cheap thrills?

I'd like to see someone try to siphon from an electric car. It would be funny if someone managed to complete a circuit with the battery bank and their tongue...

One advantage of EVs is that you can't siphon them.

One disadvantage is that when gas is hard to obtain, people are going to want to steal your EV. But hey, that's what that shotgun and assault rifle will be for...

Well, that's where pipe bombs come in handy, if you can get to them in time without getting shot. Big if though.

There was a device in the 70s - rather like a big hollow spike with a tube coming off one side. That was the evolved version. Prior to that a rock hammer and funnel would do. Thats how they would defeat locking gas caps. pound that into the low spot on a big trucks tank and just let it drain out.

I'm getting a locking gas cap, and working on the electric car thing. Here's what we're doing:

www.sunnev.com

It is a neighborhood electric vehicle, but it's great for getting around town and is legal for roads posted under 35 mph in the State of Maine.

I think that this is a way of getting around even if things get wierd.
