Eye-opening Television

Unread postby nemo » Fri 17 Nov 2006, 22:57:25

SVT1 (Swedish public service television) is halfway through airing a very impressive four part series called "planeten" (the planet). It has a very modern look, and consists mostly of soundbites by Very Smart People mixed with visually stunning photo montages set to music. Subtitles in Swedish, 90% or so is spoken English.

Production company promotional material in English (html page, links to pdf)

Anyone interested in watching this could easily download a small torrent file by searching for "planeten" at the Pirate Bay, open it with a bittorrent client and once downloaded play the 350 MB video files in a superb freeware media player

The legality of this sort of behaviour is something of a gray area, but as far as I know, public service TV companies (as the name indicates) are not in the business of suing people for copyright violations (videos can also be found at svt.se, where they play in tiny little windows that don't do the material justice at all)

Thanks for the link, it was great documentry. Now I need to find the rest of it. I noticed finnish YLE was noted in the credits, so I assume it'll be shown in Finland later.

Almost everything on them is in English, (though, getting trouch occasional Indian or Scot accent was quite demanding) :) Rreally worth of watching for everyone, though some points are very obivious for people of this board.

Dang tootin'. Sorta felt I had to post about it here, that's how great I thought it was. You just don't get to see this kind of material on Discovery Channel.

Episode 3 airs thursday 20.00 GMT, so I'd expect a torrent available at piratebay a few hours later.

Thanks mate. It was worth watching.
Let us make him who shall nourish and sustain us. What shall we do to be invoked; to be remembered in the earth.
We have tried with our first creatures but we could not make them venerate us.
So let us try to make obedient respectful beings who shall

I just watched episode 4, and it's by far the best one yet. Peak Oil is finally mentioned in no uncertain terms, and the planet's possible future development models are categorized as
1: Star Trek
2: Mad Max
3: Ecotopia
4: Big Government
The discussion is kept rather frank, but I can't help to feel that the doomerism was toned down just a bit - I realize why that is, but I don't necessarily agree with it.
With the exception of a Dutch pig tower enthusiast, this film kept me on the edge of my seat for the full hour. It touches so many profoundly important issues in such an honest way, I can't recommend it enough.

Thx a lot for le the links nemo !

I feel mostly like you..they toned down the doomerism side and i don't agree with their 50 years timescale..

Dutch Pig Tower : Ah ! That was fun..how to push the logic to the absurd and the guy saying seemed to think the same !

I have found the experiment of Hugh Sawyer pretty interresting ! Using the forest as his home (along with his sleeping bag) then go to work in London then go back to the forest..that's a kind of lifestyle that we could use in the future BUT..of course..when you have a familly, things aren't so simple..

Too bad that my side of Canada (Quebec province) is maybe a bit too cold in winter for such a life style but at least..the ecovillage is a place i would like to live..hell,i'm all for smaller house ! They cost less and you own them ,not the bank ! Unfortunatly, most housing codes restrict us to do it so that the municipality can make a minimum of bacon (around here,it is around 700 square feet)..

Would be nice..walking and working..living under the stars in the good season then going in my small house or shack in winter :)..don't get me wrong,i know how bad it can be the sleep on the ground..but doing the experiment could be a eye opener for the long run..it would show us how to be more resilient..less soft to discomfort  !

By the way..it seem that Hugh Sawyer have a nice blog and there is links about him on google..i'll try to put some later, but for now :
