This is so weird:

Astronaut granted bond on attempted murder charge

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')stronaut Lisa Nowak Tuesday was ordered released on an additional $10,000 bond for an attempted murder charge involving a romantic rival.

Nowak, 43, had earlier posted a $15,500 bond on charges of attempted kidnapping, battery and attempted burglary of a car with battery. But, her release was halted as Orlando Police brought the attempted murder charge.

Nowak, a Navy Captain, is accused of accosting Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman, 30, in the parking lot of Orlando International Airport early Monday and spraying her with pepper spray. She told police she only wanted to talk with Shipman.

Good Lord. She's a Captain in the Navy, an astronaut with one Space Shuttle mission logged, married, and has three kids, and she pulls this stunt?

The things we do for love...

What pisses me off is the sheer volume of media attention she has been given today. My god, you would think nothing else was going on in the world.

I woke up this morning and they were talking about it. I got home from work and they were STILL talking about it.

Come on, it's a great, crazy story. This is completely out of line with anything we expect from our best and brightest, which is what the astronaut corps is. They're the best we have to offer. You really don't expect this bad soap opera stuff from them.

It's a classic "man bites dog" story. It'll run for a very long time.

Yeah I was waiting for this to turn up here and what you think about it, but I had the same thoughts as Dreamtwister, it's just another kind of "Brangelina-American-Idol"- distraction...

But I also agree with Zardoz, it's too great a story to ignore. Maybe we sort of love that story because it makes such a super-human like figure like an Astronaut suddenly seem very very - well normal is the wrong word...

And then there is the passion, the obsession aspect of it. Probably one needs that to achieve something like becoming Astronaut...

Probably good that she obviously couldn't think clearly anymore, because she is of course very intelligent, if she was in cold blood she could have pulled it off quite differently...

"Love triangles" can have an intensity that can be best described as extreme. Events seem to take on a life of their own.

And then there is the 40-something female dynamic. This is where women in that age range are known to turn homicidal when intense romantic relationships are threatened- or if they are spurned. The Jean Harris & Dr. Tarnower murder affair is a good example of this. Just my personal opinion here.

I guess NASA decided to trim the psychological testing from their budget.

Damn. Imagine if she went bonkers while up in space.

She had garbage bags with her...like she was going to butcher her victim. Imagine if she had actually killed the woman?

Anyhoooo. These stories are kind of interesting. If for nothing else, like the guy above posted, just to see that astronauts are frail, human beings just like us.
