Emergency Broadcasting System

Unread postby Ferretlover » Thu 07 Feb 2008, 17:05:24

Yesterday, at lunchtime, the sirens went off (no, I can't remember which tone is supposed to be for what..sigh..).
The, last night at 10:56, a "weekly" test of the EBS aired.
Then, at 10:58, a monthly test ran.
Now, I have seen many, many of the monthly-"This is a test, this is only a test" messages.
But, I have never seen a 'weekly" test before.
And, before some of you get agitated, I will say that we were not bombed, the zombie hordes did not attack, and I saw no mushroom clouds, okay? lol
I was wondering if anyone else has seen or heard any escalation of community warning systems?

I grew up where the first working day of each month, they test the sirens - big ol' doomsday-sounding things like in every scary movie and nightmare you've ever had.

I miss those things!

My fire radio goes off every morning at 7:00am. Has ever since I've had it. Some lucky rural fire district gets to verify that it's siren works. My favorite is when they test Olney. "Olney Fire, pager test only. Pager test only. Olney Fire please acknowledge." Glad I'm not the dispatcher.

Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS

When I was growing up the volunteer fire station siren/tornado siren was tested every Saturday at noon. Now the last Wednesday at 10:00 AM each month they test the county wide system, which has both sirens and loudspeakers.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
