Dostoyevsky

Currently reading "The Devils" about the intellectual disease that swept Russia. The overall impression I get is that the author was very jaded about human nature. Highly ironic and disgusted. Maybe he had it right. The Introduction is about an intellectual poser who was a sad specimen of humanity but the author goes out of his way to "praise" him. The intro serves to introduce the theme of the stupidity of "progressive" thinking and suggest that it is really only a manifestation of boredom. Dostoyevsky seemed to know that he would be labeled a "reactionary" and he took it all in stride. I look forward to reading the rest of it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')urrently reading "The Devils" about the intellectual disease that swept Russia.

An "intellectual disease"? That seems like something that might terrify the US.

"Tom Tucker here to report on the intellectual disease epidemic. Government officials urge all Americans to stay in their homes and watch American Idle all day long, with only brief pauses to go shopping. God Bless America"

I've always loved Dostoyefsky. It's been a while since I've read his works and when I read them I was a kid so I probably didn't grasp everything. His near hatred of humanity seemed to appeal to the teenager in me.
I want to put out the fires of Hell, and burn down the rewards of Paradise. They block the way to God. I do not want to worship from fear of punishment or for the promise of reward, but simply for the love of God. - Rabia

It's a good thing he didn't live in Stalinist times. He would have gotten a bullet in the back of his head.

I just finished The Brothers Karamazov...awesome book, but one question remains...

Why does the title read like a dyslexic person? Is that just how they say it in Russian?
