No, they don't. Every generation has to re-learn the lesson. We do not learn. Current generation thinks it's a video game and the media pander to that image with cameras on smart bombs etc.
You've got a good point there, rog. I saw one of the GIs in this film say that he thinks America needs to try out the war machine every decade or so. Could be some truth to that. Isn't that the way the world has always been? since long before America became the top dog

Rog, PMS-

I think John Wayne provided the Bush Dynasty with their role model:

heh heh, not that I don't think its a fine model indeed! Cowboys, Indians! The Old West. That's probably the most romantic image of America there is, around the world.

I don't know if you were here, rog, when I shared this one with Madpaddy: an American, a Brit, a Frenchman and a Mexican were on a cross-Atlantic flight. The plane was losing power, they threw out everything they could but the plane was going down anyway. The Brit said "God save the Queen!" and jumped overboard. The Frenchman said, "Vive La France!" and jumped overboard. The American said, "Remember the Alamo!" and threw the Mexican overboard.

That reminded me of the Winston Churchill quote: " You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing - after they have exhausted all other possibilities".

I do support PMS's belief that most American's are not by nature blood-thirsty war-mongers. They may be clueless, misled, mindless, brainwashed consumers with no grasp of history, politics, or culture, but on the whole they aren't really in favor of genocide or murder. Not so many decades ago, Americans were admired for their sense of fair-play and social justice (not American politicians - just regular Americans).

The problem is not Americans, it is American politicians and their industrial/corporate consorts.

Exactly; I wonder if generation Y or the millienals know that before we had Tom Clancy's Splinter cell for the xbox we had John Wayne's "Why I love America" or "The Ballad of The Green Berets" to stir american jingoism.

No. Just when they were handing out chocolate and nylon stockings in 20th century Europe. I don't think most of the world recognized or even knew about 'Americans' as such, until after 1918/19.

So you don't think the rest of the world is also clueless, misled, mindless and brainwashed? You know, there was a scene in this movie where an Iraqi activist, who was trying to warn everybody about depleted uranium, was talking about McDonalds hamburgers. He was laughing as he he said it, but he was saying that he would rather eat fly-ridden shish khebob than cleanly packaged hamburgers. He joked and said "Give the khebob a Chance!". Funny thing is, that was derived from John Lennon song "Give Peace a Chance!" The world is so interconnected these days. We're all "brainwashed" to one degree or another. That term is thrown around so loosely. I wish you all would try to rise above it, its a useless term.

werd, PMS. I like our military. Had a nice weekend thinking about George Washington and how things could have been is we exterminated the self loathers and brought fire and brimstone to our borders. Stayed a nuetral country. simple living. What a loss. Sustainability is gone forever.
I would have been a top gun soldier in G. Washingtons military. Would have been proud to serve that man. A man. Men. MEN!

I love John Wayne. Just saw him in Hondo the other night. The best GW movie IMO. He was not too young but perfect duke years. 1957. I loved the scene where the boy said "My paw died before he could teach me how to swim. My mom didnt either." The duke turns and looks at him with that famous duke look picks him up by the back of the pants and shirt and heaves him into the river. teach him how to swim. My father did that excatly to me. I was like I dont know... up and into the river. I learned quick how to survive. I think my dad saw Hondo. I never saw hondo before.

Hey, holmes! Nice to see you posting. I like your sentiments, but if General Washington saw you write "werd" for "weird," I think he would have regarded you as cannon-fodder. Maybe, I don't know, but they highly regarded literacy in those days.

Ok. At your request, I will never use the term again. I agree with you, that in general the entire world is being manipulated, without its knowledge. I'm sure Raphael can explain it all.

So I made you mad with my gentle reminder about literacy? Come on now holmes, you know I like you. We could still live a life that values the land we live on without denigrating our language. Respect for language has nothing to do with raping the land.
