$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', 'I') wonder why there is so much heat in " CPH vs LA" . Both cities are unsustainable and are nothing but ulcers on a planet's body. As well as any other city of the similar size.

My sentiments exactly. I was only kidding about LA being 'sustainable'. Maybe I could have use a laughing smily or something. The use of the term 'sustainable' or 'green' to describe massive cities being friendly to and at one with nature is annoying in the extreme. Like running fingernails across a chalkboard annoying.

True enough. :)

Being an old guy and under-supplied in the anti-zombie weapon department, I' much rather take my chances in Copenhagen than in LA! I'd be willing to bet that folks will still be living comfortably in Copenhagen long after LA has devolved into the 'Day After'. Of course my own preference is to live in a small village away from any major population center, but I'm pretty sure that folks in Scandinavia will do better than most places in CA. They have had a lot of practice...

I agree that Copenhagen certainly "feels" and "looks" more sustainable then LA.

However, its always good to look at the numbers. The Copenhagen conference on climate change is mainly concerned with the production of CO2 through burning of fossil fuels. Its ironic that the city of Copenhagen itself is 70% dependent on fossil fuels for power (versus 50% in LA) ----- that means the wonderful light rail system is Copenhagen is actually rather unclean, in environmental terms, as it is 70% powered by fossil fuels ---mainly coal----, and the system emits huge amounts of CO2.

The next time the TV coverage shows the conference and they show a shot of the Copenhagen waterfront, look in the background------I've seen shot after shot from Copenhagen with smooth TV announcers proclaiming how "green" the city is, and all the while you can see the coal-fired power plants belching CO2 into the air in the background.

The massive ethnic diversity in LA alone virtually guarantees a tribal bloodbath if there is a societal collapse. You think Serbs and Muslims and Croats got violent in Bosnia?

You ain't seen nothin' yet if LA gets flushed... even between same racial/ethnic groups you have some pretty vicious rivalries, like the bloods and the crips. If LA goes MadMax it'll make Bosnian or Rwandan genocide look like a vacation in Disneyworld.

I'm currently living in CPH, and I certainly agree that much of the "green profile" this city is so keen on having isn't really based in reality. The city is ringed by coal plants, the roads are choked by cars during rush hour etc.
Waste management is certainly old-fashioned compared to Stockholm - it's all going into landfills and incinerators from what I can tell.

As the COP15 summit is getting under way in earnest, the whole city is plastered with corporate advertising touting the latest in green washing, as well as activist graffiti and posters telling a different story. Right now some 15.000(?) activists and 6.000 cops are getting ready to duke it out in the streets. My part of town is crawling with Danish cops and military, as well as reinforcement police from Germany.

Whatever happens in the coming week, I'm sure I won't be bored. 8O

Well consequences... I read up once that Danish sperm-count is decreasing male fertility. I'd say thats probably due to the level of pollution.

Ironically, I think the Danish are also among the most desired donors in countries that EXPORT sperm for IVF.

I was in Copenhagen on New Years Eve in the 80's and it was a wild place to be.

I wish I was there now to see the scene. My nephew will have to fill me in when he visits at Christmas.

Whatever happens there, it's good for peak oil people.

Maybe they'll agree about carbon credits and we'll be able to make some progress on alternative energy.

We'll see.

Wastefull how much metal, glass, paper, wood, plastics that can be recycled are thrown into landfills daily worldwide. How much waste is that. And in most places of the world resources to recycle are not even close to readily available.

Co2 from a wine fermenting bottle in a plastic container to hold the co2 made plants grow twice their size in less than 48hours.

Co2 is plant and planet friendly and plants turn it into oxygen, as fast as they can get it basically.

Get a plastic tub container that can hold most of the co2 to at least top leaf level, put some plants inside it, let some Co2 come on it like a waterfall and watch how fast and lush green etc the plants grow.

( growth rates will vary on plant types of course , however plants and planets and people need and use co2)

Biochar for plants also helps hold co2 amongst plants, oh and mollasses is excellent as well and contains plant readily availble carbon in it.

Oh and whos going to outlaw or tax volcanos for co2 production all around the earth, wildfires etc , vegetation decaying to compost etc etc.

tax hexes are axes against the empires that incite such so universal history shows.

Also Oregano oil for staph etc, parsely for lung cancer etc, tumeric for tumor cells etc, milk thistle for liver kidney and brain rejuvenation and detoxification and protection research it?

Denmark's per capita CO2 emissions are about 9 tonnes per head; America's are about 19 tonnes per head. And as the article itself says

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')o be fair, the Danes are far more eco-friendly in terms of what they do with all that rubbish. A good portion of it is gardening waste, rather than soda cans and the like. Recycling rates are extremely high, and enormous incinerators around the country don't just burn trash but convert it into energy. About 5% of garbage ends up in landfills, compared with 54% in the United States.

The article doesn't come close to living up its own title. What a truly pathetic - and pathetically transparent - attempt by the American media to muddy the waters.

It would be better if the Danes did not create so much waste in the first place. A country that creates that much cannot call itself "green."

Then there's the small matter of where Denmark's electricity comes from:
