It's not quite as bad as it looks

some of that stuff stays on top of the water table and can be avoided with a properly cased deep well.

some of the stuff sinks and can't be remediated

the areas of impact are not continuous as depicted, so there's plenty of room for both contamination and water supply with proper planning

one thing done these days that I think is a big joke is the placement of "institutional controls" such as Environmental Land Use Restrictions (ELURs) on impacted property, as though trespassers or future zombies will go to the town hall and get a site map to show them where they could be exposed to contaminants, LOL
