Chung Kuo - (Middle Kingdom) by David Wingrove

I picked up this book from my library this weekend, I originally read it about 20 years ago, it's about a future Earth where the Chinese rule the world via 7 families. There are 7/8 books in the series, I have the first 2. Some of the predictions/science in the stories are quite interesting, as they seem farly straight forward now whereas when I first read the books they seemed like fantasy.

Rarely read books more than once, but quite enjoyed it second time around. Not top literature, but interesting to see how things have developed and the scenario seems almost credible now.

I think I actually read 8/9 of the books in the series. David Wingrove actually visited China after the last book. China in the late 1980's is very different from China today. For example the Pudong area in Shanghai was just farmland back then and now it probably has more skyscrapers than Century City here in Los Angeles.

Although I think China will succeed the US I think it would be difficult to see how the system of globalization really made that possible. The dollar may be a curse for the world but it really helped Europe,Japan and China industrialize very rapidly. Also the free flow of Western experts and the highly skilled and well funded overseas Chinese community helped China to develop enormously.

In the late 1980's I don't think anyone would have ever imagined that China would be a larger car market than the US in less than 25 years. It's an incredible

Even in early 2000 I don't think anyone would imagine that China would be the #1 foreign holder of US debt. The speed and pace of China's transformation is really unprecedented.
