Maybe it's because I don't gamble in the Wall Street casino, but I don't see how this downgrade will lead to the collapse of the US, much less Olduvai Gorge. It's just yet another data point suggesting the long-term decline of the US economy. Fedgov debt is hardly our most serious problem---we've got mountains of consumer debt, serious structural unemployment, massive trade deficits, etc., etc., etc., ad naseum.

That said, I have no doubt the useful idiots in the Tea Party and the wealthy interests they represent will demand even deeper austerity measures for working and middle class Americans, which will almost certainly lead us right back into an official recession (not just stagflation like we've been experiencing). Who knows how things will proceed from there, but it's looking more and more like a Great Depression II.
