Amazon: Under a Green Sky

Review: Under a Green Sky

I am a bit freaked out by the thesis of this book, that basically, by the year 3000, practically all life on earth will be wiped out, including it's current top predator, man. Not even images of man esconsed upon the north pole enjoying a leisurely and warm sunny day comes forth after reading this book.

That may seem like a long time, but note that the (ancient) Greeks, for instance, still seem like not so long ago to us. So there won't be anyone left to read about how great and clever was our civilization -- though we may be cursed at a much earlier date.

The basic idea is that when global warming occurs fast enough, it is not even the absolute amount of global warming or CO2 that is present that is significant, but the rate of increase that causes the North Atlantic oceanic conveyor belt to turn off. Once this occurs, the oxygenation of the ocean goes down and organic matter begins to rot and emit massive amounts of hydrogen sulfide into the atmosphere, sufficient to extinguish most plant and animal life on the earth.

The book is a page turner as well. Enjoy. ':-D'

Don’t count opossums and cockroaches out so fast. They both survived the Chicxulub event (asteroid that hit the Yucatan and exterminated the dinosaurs) pretty much as they existed before it.
