Being PO aware makes you better human ???

I think it really doesn't matter if PO will hit or not (some wonderful energy discovery) ,if it will be flat or not, guns, food piles and solar panels won't save you, people just can't forsee what PO-after will be,you can speculate but believe or not life is really unpredictable. That's why I don't worry much about future.Future doesn't exist yet.

I'm glad you got so scared,so concerned,so obsessed ?

Just look at you.

Most of you are more environment friendly than ever before in your whole life, you started to save energy and seek renewable ways of producing energy, you influenced other people and they start to think about it too,you understand there is no 'free lunch' - you understand life must exist in balance, you even got out of debt ! Some of you saw consumption madness, saw even the flaws in the 'greatest ever' economy system - the capitalism, you stopped to be shopping-zombies depressed about not being able to buy new SUV,you start to think what's really important in your life and what's not,you even bike more !

I've read your posts, many of them,I've read your thoughts, worries and fears.I think you became better humans, did you ?

I am afraid that's not true, at least not for me. Although I always had, at least in my view, quite a small ecological footprint, at least smaller than that of my immediate surroundings, for example I never wanted a car, I am still aware that I am privileged and use more ressources than I should.
If there is a decision between convenience and energy waste, convenience wins. I enjoy the benefits of modern life, techno gadgets, plastic crap, cheap flights, food from other continents and so on. I am aware that this is not good, but at the same time I have no sleepless nights about it, especially since I know about PO.
I am always thinking it could be the last time I do this or that, and enjoy it. So in that respect I am even worse than before PO-awareness. I guess am not a very moral person.

P.O. has infected my point of view to the extent that I see energy equations everywhere on the farm, and in everyday life.

Every shovel full of soil that I turn myself is "endothermic": the sunlight I've consumed is being pressed into service.

I've calculated that it takes about 50 gallons of gasoline to do all our haying.

As they say, "Waste is food." I'm more fond of my compost pile than ever.

I've managed to squeeze 2-4 more miles per gallon out of my VW, just by paying extra attention to how I drive.

I now know what all the abbreviations and numbers on plastics mean.

I thought I was "spare-living" before becoming mesmerized by the peak: I've competely eschewed popular culture and "going out." All the action is right here at home.

People around me look more and more like zombies. That term Kunstler borrowed, "concensus trance," is so apt.

Today, two HUGE pickups stopped outside our house, just to take pictures of our turkeys forageing in the yard. People find the facts of life that abstract, that our everyday foodstock here on the farm is something quaint to be photographed.

This computer is an anomaly, more and more. One day it might just disappear from my life altogether.

Peak oil has made me more aware of my environment. But perhaps what affected me the most wasn't peak at all - but running into a guy I know who is "homeless". He lives on less then $200 per month, sometimes far less then this. He recommended some books to me and it was after I read about human history and whatnot, did I begin to see that things weren't always this way (so screwed up!).

I've been convinced for decades that there really is a better way to live - peak provides an opportunity for people to start thinking about what that is.

I am concerned for a lot of people, even myself, because I know this isn't going to be easy. My main concern is the incredible sluggishness of people to do what needs to be done... myself included!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('killJOY', 'T')his computer is an anomaly, more and more. One day it might just disappear from my life altogether.

I could honestly give up a LOT of things and still be content but I think I would have a very hard time giving up the computer (and not just because I am a software developer). Computers are simply the best way to get information, which as the cliche says is power. Why give that up? Easy access to information is such a fundamental component of my quality of life that I simply couldn't give it up.
