Barter Town runs on WHAT?!!!

Unread postby emersonbiggins » Wed 23 Apr 2008, 18:11:51

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ut manure and ethanol are only part of the story. The plant will also produce tons of distiller's grain, which are leftovers from the fermenting process that are fed back to the cattle creating more manure and fuel for the plant.

Ugh. This is about one of the manure-to-ethanol refineries built in the Texas panhandle. Basically, the heated manure provides steam to distill corn into ethanol.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')indloff doesn't think America can run on manure or even ethanol.

"I don't think ethanol is the silver bullet to answer all of our fossil fuel problems," he said.

Perhaps the poor will use horses with diapers and the manour will be
used to produce ethanol so the rich can keep on motoring?

Whats' the word on dog poop as a fertilizer?

Regardless of the answer, I have to say that anecdotally, I used to be in the landscaping business, and I ALWAYS found that the backyard grass was thicker and more robust than the front yard grass, which I attributed to animal poop being applied by the resident pets over time.

If dog poop is good, it might be a good service to take a bucket and poop claw on walks and collect neighborhood poop for composting.

I think I heard somewhere to stay away from dog poop for fertilizer. Maybe it was human poop. I don't recall.

You can skip this step by feeding your dog Taco Bell and letting him broadcast his own "fertilizer" at-will... 8)

It's all about disease.

The closer an animal is to human, the more likely it will harbor pathogens that can cross to humans.

Cows and horses, eating lots of grass and whatnot, are not close.

Dogs are closer. Or at least their doody is.

Just my guess.

Forget the cows, I want to know if I can subsist by eating distillers grain byproducts when the biofuel industry leaves me with nothing else to eat.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'I') think I heard somewhere to stay away from dog poop for fertilizer.

Bringing dog poop into a yard is likely to bring parasites into that yard,
unless it's been sterilized by heat or time.

The urine from animals and septic leaching beds would be two
other explanations for backyard grass being greener.

Here's a thread you may have missed about fertilizer options, it's pretty good

What if it's already in the yard, as in my dog deposited it there?

Frankly, here's the way it seems to go: dog poops, poop dries, grass grows, BigTex mows the grass, mower turns dried poop into dust that mixes with wet grass clippings.

Sounds like pretty good fertilizer to me.

Sorry if that sounds gross.

There's often a lot of stuff already there in yards. I did landscaping
one summer and ran into some interesting things...

Not too gross and I'm sure it is a good fertilizer, but I still would try to
keep it out of gardens.

I guess if the land isn't available for growing food, there's no need to produce manure fertilizer!

I was thinking that dog poop would be useful for growing mulch and compost crops.
