API and Oil Company Ads

Unread postby 3aidlillahi » Fri 27 Jun 2008, 18:57:37

Has anyone else noticed the growing airtime that the API (American Petroleum Institute) and various "energy" companies have been buying up? Always talking about how we have so much energy, that they are trying to keep the environment safe, extract as much as possible, that many people are tied into oil financially, etc. Just generally keeping people from going socialistic on them, I guess.

It may be working. We now have a majority of the country (60%+) who think we should drill in OCS and less in ANWR and that same number think that doing so will decrease prices significantly. About half though think we should nationalize, IIRC.

Have they been running many ads in your area? I don't mind the oil companies' ads. I just really hate that bitch from the API ads. Seems so much like she was trained by Fox (or the people who train the people at Fox).

Have you noticed the pap about "we have enough domestic oil to power 60,000,000 cars for 40 years" or some such nonsense? I take it most viewers will not realize that there are 4 times that amount of cars already on American roads.

I've actually seen on other forums, gasbuddy.com for instance, where members would bring these numbers out from API and go "Ah ha!, PO isn't real". Yeah, a good bit of people just listen to the talking points and can never get much further than that.

I noticed this curious trend with SHELL Oil commercials on BBC about their research activity in the area of fuel cells and looking at other energy sources. This started around 2003 - 2004.

That commercial is a burr in this burro's saddle. At work We have CNN 24/7 playing in the breakroom. I bite my tounge in the every time that smug woman lectures us that everything will be OK.

This is most prevelant on CNN. EVERY commercial break has an oil company ad talking about how green they are and how much oil we have, a Big Pharma ad, and a self-promotion spot for one of their programs. Sometimes you'll see a chemical company ad or an ad from Big Ag.
