Anyone else hate "superbowl"?

Unread postby oowolf » Thu 02 Feb 2006, 17:49:09

Corporate fascism's idea of a football game. 70,000 clueless consumeroids; 11,000 cops, rentacops, FBI, Homeland security; metal dectectors; ID's; thousands of videocams; 10 mile no-fly zone; multimillion $ advertisements; several dozen overweight men chasing each other for 3 or 4 hours; busty bimbos; and The National Anthem!!!!!!

The epitome of our craptacular civilization.

I have been greatly amused by my local Seattle paper blathering about how Detroit is a "vibrant" city...the vibrations are from derelict homes collapsing upon themselves, though :-)

Yes I hate the superbowl. But not exactly for those reasons...

I'd rather play video games or attend a 'superbowl' party (one where no one really watches the T.V.)...

I can never just sit and watch sports.. it's so boring...

I tried throwing a party for the Masters golf tournament. Unfortunately, not many of my friends realized how much more exciting that is than the Super Bowl. I had a lot of leftover beer....

Football is interesting. Watching golf, however, is like watching paint dry.

I love football but I'm not a big fan of the super bowl. The commercials are pretty funny usually and it's a great game usually. However, I hate how mainstream and glamorous it is. It's dressed up like a pageant show. It's played in February which would be fucking awesome if it weren't always in a dome. Please have it in KC, Pitt, NE, Minnesota, just not in a dome or Miami, Houston, etc.

However, I'm willing to let it slide this year as my Steelers are in it.

BTW, they aren't overweight, well kinda. Their in shape, much more than you I'd bet, but they are over the limit of "healthy" defined by the gov't. But then again, Michael Jordon was in that same category. Too much muscle actually hurts you. And I'm pretty sure looking at graphs and typing on teh computer all day won't have much of a function post-peak.

Hitler and Franco loved sporting spectaculars. So did the Caesars who ruled Rome. As do Bush, Howard and Blair.

Spectator sports are for serfs.

On PLAYING sport, not a bad way to pass an hour of leisure, I wonder how those girly men (in US football) can wear all that padding and still call it a contact sport. I've seen braver girls lacrosse teams, you yanks should play aussie rules and discover why your testicles have shrunk.

Oowolf, you should run for governor or something. You've got my vote.

The problem with the Super Bowl is the same as everything else in America. Everyone is celebrating sports by having this masturbatory extravaganza watching a bunch of steroid saturated criminals play a game while they themselves sit around on the couch too tanked up on beer and nachos to move. If you like sports. Great! Go play sports. Have a life. Don't sit around trying to live vicariously through the overhyped fictionalized version of someone else's life on your boob tube.

When you put it like that it sounds like some terrible dysfunctional society as depicted in a near-future film.

Let's face it, in a few short years, people are going to look back at how we've lived these past few decades and not believe the amount of time and energy we put into things like travel, sports, entertainment, etc. Football is great, but the Super Bowl is an overproduced monstrosity. That said, I have never seen this city jumping in all of my life, and it was a sight to behold, even if only for a few days. I doubt it will bring any long term rebirth.

I confess, I love the NFL. If it weren't for sports, I probably wouldn't even have a TV. The Super Bowl is often a disappointment, game-wise, but I wouldn't dream of missing it.

I'm going to miss the NFL, and my Yankees, when TSHTF.

Though I wonder how much I'd be willing to pay to watch sports. There's a push by consumers, supported by the Bush administration, to force cable TV to offer a "pick your own" option. Rightwing Christian types don't want to have to pay for "smutty" channels like MTV, leftwingers don't want their money going to Faux News.

What many don't realize is that sports is the most expensive item on the menu. Gotta pay all those $200 million dollar ball players, after all. ESPN is by far the most expensive cable channel, but only 18% of viewers watch it. Everyone pays for it, though. With a "pick your own" option, 4 out of 5 viewers may bail out of ESPN, meaning sports fans would have to pay five times as much.

There's a difference between playing a pick-up game with your friends and watching football being played at its highest level.

The complexities and sheer althetiscm of the NFL is amazing. Football is like real-time chess.

The only difference is that chess is usually played by people with an IQ of over 50.
