Pretty grand, and very deluded.

Who is deemed nuts to a large extent depends on who is doing the name calling. I once had a psychologist recommend a guy who liked to murder and rape little girls for parole. The murderer was Herbert Lee Evans, an accomplished pen and ink artist. The psychologist asserted that anyone with that degree of talent could not possibly be insane. Evans had murdered at least 18 little girls. Needless to say, we ignored the good doctor’s findings and Evans died in prison.

I came to view prison psychologist in about the same light as that of the village shaman. The whole process borders on pseudo science.

Using pseudo science as a criterion, I suspect anybody who believes that big government can solve their problems is delusional. Under that definition, a large part of the Republicans and almost all of the Democrats are certifiably insane. I am sure we can find somebody willing to conduct a study to support that theory, possibly an independent.

I thought the USA outsourced its industrial base years ago.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gw', 'I') would go a step further and say many, if not most Americans are actually insane.

Study: U.S. Leads In Mental Illness, Lags in Treatment

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Washington Post', 'O')ne-quarter of all Americans met the criteria for having a mental illness within the past year, and fully a quarter of those had a "serious" disorder that significantly disrupted their ability to function day to day, according to the largest and most detailed survey of the nation's mental health.

Although parallel studies in 27 other countries are not yet complete, the new numbers suggest that the United States is poised to rank No. 1 globally for mental illness, researchers said.

The survey focused on four major categories of mental illness: anxiety disorders (such as panic and post-traumatic stress disorders); mood disorders (such as major depression and bipolar disease); impulse control disorders (such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder); and substance abuse.

Almost half of Americans meet the criteria for such an illness at some point in their lives, the survey found.

It is not clear why Americans have such high rates of mental illness, but cultural factors clearly play a role. Immigrants quickly increase their risk of mental health problems, especially if they do not live in native ethnic communities.

See, this is why communication is so important. Some living outside the Empire might actually believe this article is straight forward. I'm not sure, but I suspect gw is one of those ignorant individuals. He's obviously one who likes to promote Anti-Americanism on the internet, just like AQ and radical Islam. He may not know it, but AQ loves him. This article is nothing more than Company A paying Company B to produce a report that claims Mental Illness is a growing and serious problem. Company A sells the magic pills which make everything okay, Company B gets paid legally or maybe not, and the Washington Post gets an eye-catching headline for their Wednesday edition so they can attract more eyes which equate to more Advertisement dollars. Anybody with half a brain can figure that out....

Well, if you actually read the article you would see that it was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and conducted by Harvard university. Of course the pharmaceutical industry has interests in studies like this. But organizations like Harvard university also have an interest in maintaining their credibility, so maybe the study has some relevant information.

As far as anti-Americanism is concerned, you needn't look any further than the White House. Can you think of anybody else that has caused more damage to the US and spread anti-American sentiment so widely around the world? Who else has trampled so heavily on the US Constitution and undermined our Constitutional rights?

I dont need to read the article, it's a waste of time. This process is "rinse and repeat" with a different subject every day.

Like I said, The bush admin is an easy target. They havent been very effective. However, the world's and America's problems didnt start and aren't going to end with the Bush Admin. And your anti-american persona only fuels AQ.

Having said that, freedom to protest is about as American as you can get. If you disagree , its your responsiblity to voice that opinion. The problem I have is when the protest is taken to extreme. Especially in todays environment. There is a whole "movement" worldwide that wants to see America burn/crash/dead/collpase for all different kinds of reasons. Some good, most bad and for their own self interest.

If the world continues on its present course, I predict a day when most people will pray , to whoever, to see an American soldier and flag. - JMO

I don't know. It has become very popular to be self-loathing in America. I'd guess our "delusions of grandeur" are at an all time low, given our increasing propensity to hate ourselves and view everything American as a negative force in the world.

I would like to see a study that says most Americans are mentally healthy and sane, or have a significantly lower percentage of mental illness compared to other cultures.

My eldest daughter gave me something wonderful that she bought for me in Amsterdam. A copy of a painting by Vincent Van Gogh of cherry blossoms. It is a truly beautiful painting done by a man who was truly miserable. Vincent was a prophet.

I love to paint and I love paintings. One of the good things about humans. You must be proud of your daughters.

The theme of this thread is mental illness. Not a happy topic. But Van Gogh, damn, didn't he capture the imagination of so many of us? He was as crazy as it gets. But I love him.

damn, I'm telling you, ask yourself, how can a man present himself so unloving and angry but yet paint all those lovely swirls and those marvelous color contrasts? Vincent Van Gogh is an international treasure and he was sick as a dog. Go figure.
