To my mind the most important component of Gilmore's case is the question of "secret laws" in a democratic society.

If there's to be a law requiring ID to get on airplanes (or for any other domestic travel), the law needs to be proposed in the open, debated in the open, enacted by Congress, and stand up to independent judicial review. I might or might not agree with such a law, but at least it would be "legal."

Secret laws... secret detensions... "extraordinary rendition"... this slope is very very slippery.

Good article. Our country needs more poeple like John Gilmore and
fewer sheeple, IMO.

I'm glad he's calling our governments bluff on this issue. There seems
to be more and more examples of 'creeping fascism' these days,
and the amount of secrecy in the US government has reached ludicrous
proportions. Especially under the regime of Bush the Lesser. What
are they trying to hide?

I can relate to the hassel he's had to go through too. I never had a
drivers liscence, and I finally had to break down and get a 'state
ID', which is a photo ID card like a drivers liscence just so I wouldn't
get bugged when trying to buy booze (at least when I was younger, heh)
and cash checks, etc. At the same time I don't think it's unreasonable
for the airlines to ask for ID, just as long as they are clear why AND
there's a law on the books.

Interesting to see what happens, but my gut feeling is not much will
come of it.

yea i admire what he is doing. he is actually fighting this 'creeping fascism' and not hiding away in a house or bunker with tons of guns and ammo wanting to go out like Rambo when the fascism goes far enough to actively attack individual citizens.
