Solar Overtakes Gas, Wind as Source of New US Power
Despite tariffs that President Trump imposed on imported panels, the U.S. installed more solar energy than any other source of electricity in the first quarter.
Developers installed 2.5 gigawatts of solar in the first quarter, up 13 percent from a year earlier, according to a report Tuesday from the Solar Energy Industries Association and GTM Research. That accounted for 55 percent of all new generation, with solar panels beating new wind and natural gas turbines for a second straight quarter.

The growth came even as tariffs on imported panels threatened to increase costs for developers. Giant fields of solar panels led the growth as community solar projects owned by homeowners and businesses took off. Total installations this year are expected to be 10.8 gigawatts, or about the same as last year, according to GTM. By 2023, annual installations should reach more than 14 gigawatts.
“Solar has become a common-sense option for much of the U.S., and is too strong to be set back for long, even in light of the tariffs,” SEIA Chief Executive Officer Abigail Ross Hopper said in a statement.

The high costs come from the grid extensions and huge amounts of storage that are needed to cover temporal variations in the abundance of electricity, which is far more pronounced for solar power. The apparently modest cost of primary renewable converters is largely squandered due to transmission and storage losses. Storage and grid extension adds huge capital costs. His study no doubt lacks lateral thinking; there are a variety of storage and demand management technologies that can be combined to do the job more cheaply than his simple scenarios. But he is wrong only in the magnitude of his calculations. His basic conclusion, that a renewable electricity system will be much more expensive than a like for like replacement with pressurised water reactors is not in doubt.
The problem can be talked around, but is essentially very simple. To produce a steady 1 unit of power using a renewable energy source, you need enough converters to produce 1 unit of power on a time average basis, plus enough additional converters to cover storage and transmission losses. Then you need some sort of energy storage system, that must be rated to cover the maximum excess of demand over renewable energy production at any one time. It must also be capable of absorbing energy at high rates, because a lot of the energy absorbed by the store will arrive during limited time periods. In simple terms, you need 2.5 power plants to provide the output of just one dispatchable power plant. One of those power plants will need to be huge, as it includes the energy store. The renewable energy converters do not appear particularly expensive on a per unit power basis, but factor in storage losses and the capital cost of transmission and suddenly they aren’t that cheap anymore.
I am discussing the problem qualitatively and in simplistic terms. But what we are essentially fighting against is the second law of thermodynamics. By powering human society with solar and wind energy, we are attempting to draw high quality thermodynamic work, from a relatively high entropy (diffuse and variable) primary energy source. The higher costs (transmission and storage) stem from attempting to overcome those entropic effects. There are ways of managing those costs and we have discussed some of them before. But the bottom line is, no one ever defeats the second law of thermodynamics.

Here it already begins. There is more than solar and wind. Essential is geothermal for space heating with heat pumps. And what about biomass in agricultural France?

What is “huge”? Countries often have strategic oil reserves to the tune of 6 months or more. It doesn’t make a difference if the oil is replaced with renewable produced NH3, methanol, whatever.
But as you admit, we can’t decide the matter in a short post. For me cost is only one aspect, safety, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, suitability for the lesser technological gods in the third world, everything, in my view, points towards renewables.
Until proven to the contrary, I assume the Fraunhofer institute did its homework, when it developed a model of society, dynamically optimized the model and came to the conclusion that a renewable energy system will be operational at similar cost as our current fossil one.

Europe has decided that it is going to be renewable energy, with some nuclear for French nuclear weapons. I support that view, on principal grounds. Nuclear energy is fundamentally unacceptable, regardless of cost.
