The problem really is no longer population growth per say if we only have a few years left. Our question needs to be do we have a few years and that is based on can we maintain what we have? I am taking this point for view for this discussion because most of the time we have optimist academics that tell us we are ok because population growth is arresting and optimist take the view of maintaining economic affluence is a given. They don’t explain much what that means just that the great danger of overpopulation is now over. Economics of an overshoot are pretended away. What do we do now that we are overpopulated per a reasonable carrying capacity?

Bifurcations from the systematic breaching of thresholds occurring from a global world in overshoot with population and consumption changes the dynamics of the meaning of population growth or decline as they happen longer term. The slow gradual increases we have seen were emergent over generations. Adaptation was allowed and it was positive adaptation at least in regards to humans improving living standards. It is obvious for non-humans and the planet it was anything but good. We are now talking the dynamics of a population teetering on the edge of a carrying capacity breach. What is a few million more or less matter now except that it might break the camel’s back?

We likely now have 3-6 BIL too many people depending on where civilization’s bottom is. This is supported by “real” and “honest” science. The issue now is can we maintain complexity to support all these people and avoid a die off “bottom”? All this talk by our academics on a future with a population that is naturally ameliorating its growth may be mute because the dynamics are now about the population itself and its carrying capacity. The dynamics of population growth or decline are meaningless when we are talking about a 5-20 year adjustment process. Now it is about more than slight changes in deaths over births now it is about the degree of deaths on average for how many year.

Nature adjusts populations and we like to think we have mastered that process over the last 200 years with technology but it is clear we just learn the overshoot process. A likely reasonable carrying capacity even with relative complexity is 1-3 BIL depending on the civilization. A wise civilization might be able to handle 3BIL. One like ours needs to be in the 500MIL-1BIL range because we are not wise. We are unwise and we are unable to check our technological urges. We are more interested in breaking into the deepest secrets of nature than learning to live sustainably with nature. How important is quantum computing when your civilization is being ripped apart? That reminds me of Mayan temples in the jungle.

To get back to 1-3BIL population over a few decades is using the averages and that is brutal. Even if you take a long view we are still talking 200-300MIL deaths over births a year and this must last a generation or two. That is an average so in a bad year it could be 500MIL. Can you imagine a 500MIL death year??? We whine about WWII but that is another world compared to this. This makes the question more than can we stop population growth and maintain a shallow decline? This is about how do we live with a possible die down? This is rarely talked about because the way of life will be draconian. Maintaining what we have will require superhuman cooperation and wise choices. It is also unclear if we can maintain such a large population in affluence. Complexity requires affluence if this current large population can be maintained. Will affluence hold out? Populations naturally aspire for affluence especially modern ones whose participants have been spoiled with a narrative of more affluence. Affluence is the problem now and especially the urge to more so my optimism is low.

It is more likely our civilization will not be able to maintain this way of life and without it there will be a die down and it will likely be harsh. Who knows how this will play out because we don’t have all the variables of nature and human nature but the math is clear on this. So I would say now is a unique time in history where we have all the cards on the table. The cards will start turning over quickly this decade. They have been turning over for the least two decades. We can no longer deny many inconvenient facts of our civilization in overshoot. Science is telling us clearly this cannot go on “as-is” but we are doubling down on “as-is”. We likely have no choice but to continue as we are because what are the options? The pot is good and the spoils will be reaped soon.

Moving closer to, or in with, family would be your best bet. Then help them to prepare as much as possible. I know that is not the current culture there in America, as it was in the past, but it is common here in the Philippines. Families are still close and help each other as much as possible.
