Interesting talk, and a fairly good summary of current the current energy vectors in human civilization. However, it appears limited in vision and scope and biased toward a specific outcome.
It also does the typical smoothing of results to make a simple story. Local and regional future conditions can vary tremendously across the world as energy collapses.
Her graph of net energy versus gross production makes not sense. Since the production needed to produce that net energy would have to remain high while society has essentially collapsed. Of course the production would collapse with societies collapse, they are not independent. Basically, both net and gross energy production would collapse together in an avalanche effect as society was no longer able to produce the support systems needed to produce the energy.

Use to be I could view her website. Now with the new change, her ads block her essays. My computer and my OS are very old so it might be that as a problem or simply greed.

Tainter & especially Korowics have had a big influence on my thinking about the systematic nature of collapse. You all have heard of Tainter I am sure. Korowics does not have the books but has produced several extremely though provoking articles I highly recommend reading if you are interested in systematic collapse

OK NR, I am going to check this site if you recommend it.

Should be a must watch video for everyone. A decade from now we’ll all wish we hadn’t squandered our energy resources driving to and from work everyday in the pursuit of economic activity, growth, creature comforts, and finance. There’s going to be a lot of very desperate, hungry, and angry people in the not so distant future. Add climate change to the mix and we have an even larger recipe for disaster.
Time is running out, are you prepared?
Northwest Resident on Mon, 3rd Feb 2014 4:48 pm
Davy — I think you’ll find some good information there. If you find that my recommendation truly sucks, keep it to yourself — deal? 🙂
GregT — Time is indeed running out. As I have tried to point out in several posts on this site, we are living on borrowed time. This is truly the calm before the storm. Those who are unaware, in denial and/or are not making preparations will be in for a big shock.

Maybe if we are lucky then a nuclear holocaust will solve all our problems.
GregT on Mon, 3rd Feb 2014 5:34 pm
Jerry,
Be very careful what you wish for. Desperate people, tend to do desperate things.

We’ve moved from old guys with beards and robes with signs reading “IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD, REPENT” to IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT, PREPARE” in a power point presentation.
Now that is progress.
Northwest Resident on Mon, 3rd Feb 2014 6:26 pm
rollin — I’m not an old guy, I don’t have a beard and I don’t wear a robe. But it is very clear to me that the end of the world as we knew it is already here. We’re in stage one of TEOTWAWKI — with success stages rolling over the hill and headed our way. If you can’t see that, or if you won’t let yourself see that, that’s okay — most people don’t “get it.” Just keep sipping on that “hopium” milkshake — technology will save us — everything is going to be just fine.
GregT on Mon, 3rd Feb 2014 7:03 pm
Actually rollin,
I believe the ‘old guys with beards” signs usually read; REPENT, THE END IS NEAR. (or if you prefer, NIGH) Some maybe a little ahead of their times perhaps, but correct none-the-less.
Infinite exponential growth in a finite environment is an impossibility, and considering that our monetary systems require infinite exponential growth, their continuation is also an impossibility. The time is already upon us, there is only one direction to go from here, and it isn’t towards the ‘world as you know it’.
Prepare or not, that is your choice. I would say however, that it would be much smarter to be prepared, and not need to be, than to be unprepared and caught off guard.

@GregT
Yes, you are right. My apologies.
For some reason I woke up this morning with the image of Slim Pickens riding a bomb like a bronco at the end of the movie “Dr. Strangelove”.
IIRC, the song “Happy Trails” was playing in the background as the world went BOOM.

Nope, it was “We’ll Meet Again” with Vera Lynn:

Yes, Northwest I have to agree with you. I have watched nature being destroyed and the world poisoned as long as I remember. Most of what I grew to know as the world was bulldozed under, paved over, built upon and covered with oil in a very short time.

Anyone know what Nicole has been doing recently? It’s been quite some time since she has authored new posts on The Automatic Earth and the site doesn’t show any of her lecture tours either.
