Smog and pollution is a huge problem in modern environments. The rich world is better off than most considering the legal restrictions on pollutants, but there are plenty of problems in other parts of the world (such as Asia). Many of these problems stem from poor use of land and it can have drastic effects for the people living on this planet. The majority of the 7 billion people live in poverty and it is no wonder that most of them are looking for some way out. Hopefully with time, people will be able to see that spending money on optimizing the land is the best bet.
There are many scientists and land companies, such as those selling cheap land for sale, that are eager to get our land better optimized. Some of the governments in the western world and in Asia have been promoting better use of the land through grants and other government incentives. While most of the people who are getting involved in this type of optimization are scientists, there are plenty of farmers and lay people involved as well. Hopefully, this trend will continue so that humans can sustain the populations that we currently have.
That being said, optimization of land is going to be needed on a very large scale in order to make any real difference. People who are interested in getting involved should enter the field as there is plenty of profit in feeding people with cheaper resources. Although there are some barriers to progress in this field, there are plenty of able bodied individuals who can help to make this a reality.

ARTICLE SAID – Hopefully with time, people will be able to see that spending money on optimizing the land is the best bet.
plenty of profit in feeding people with cheaper resources.
Numb nut. To optimize the land we first have to shrink population by ½ or more. Without a lower population there is little hope. Not sure where this Cat got the idea of feeding people with cheaper resources. Maybe he is talking insects from the land and jellyfish from the sea. I think we have too many people studying journalism because I am finding my brain is being strained by too much junk writing.

Seems I am blocked from commenting on this article. Even though it accepted my comment in the first article above.

Hahahahaha… now I will try again.
Why have I been blocked?

What words? More BS from the ‘Security Sate’?

Everyone seems to have a personal idea of how to save the human race. Few think through the systems they propose. Most would find that they are not workable because, somewhere in the loop they make a huge assumption to validate their ideas. True, there are ways to optimize land use. For instance, there are 49,000 square MILES of lawns in the US alone which could be gardens. 1/10 acre for every man, woman, and child in the US, wasted.
There are also ways to get more out of what we have by just growing and consuming locally. The amount of food wasted is said to be between 20% and 40% and I can accept that as fact. Look in any dumpster behind a grocery store or restaurant. Look in the average home at what goes into the disposal or garbage. Look at the loss from transportation. The loss in processing. The loss from the 1st world aversion to blemishes or imperfections in their food. Not to mention the waste of transforming huge amounts of grain into beef cattle for the rich.
No, we could feed 10 billion adequately, but for profit capitalism/BAU will never permit it. There is too much profit in death and suffering.
(I took out some punctuation.?)

We need to optimize the number of people……..
Endless population growth is not sustainable and only leads to more poverty, suffering and despair.

Makati – Bitchy when that happens ain’t it?
Davy – Not denying that there is something to what you’re saying about population but let’s look at it from another angle for a moment: Admittedly, this article comes up short in terms of explanatory material so I’ll try and fill in a tad. If 3-5% of the degraded soil on the planet were brought back to life (sucking that carbon in), the atmospheric CO2 levels would go down well below the 1992 targets so hypocritically announced during all those international conferences. Bottom line: land management should be a major issue – if it isn’t, it’s because some very large corporations can make a lot more money off devastating the Earth in the short term rather than rejuvenating it in the middle term.
