Japan confirms explosion, leakage at nuke plant

Japan confirms explosion, leakage at nuke plant thumbnail

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano confirmed on Saturday there has been an explosion and radiation leakage at Tokyo Electric Power Co’s (TEPCO) (9501.T) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

“We are looking into the cause and the situation and we’ll make that public when we have further information,” Edano said.

“At present, we think 10 km evacuation is appropriate.”

Japan earlier in the day warned of a meltdown at a reactor at the plant, damaged when a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the northeast coast, but said the risk of radiation contamination was small.

Edano also said that Japan has expanded the evacuation area around the Fukushima Daini nuclear plant. (Reporting by Kiyoshi Takenaka; Editing by Joseph Radford)

I’ve seen several stories like this today. Some sources are calling it a hoax. Does anyone have info from a reliable source?

This explosion story seems to originate from a single unconfirmed source. There are no reliable sources confirming this.

    “… FUKUSHIMA, Japan (Reuters)

It’s very likely that this did happen and that it will be downplayed by the governments.

This is not a current event. I do not believe Edano is current cabinet secretary and Fairewinds.com confirmed the event did not happen……this time.

This is a good example of the limited information coming from TEPCO and Japan’s government regarding the continuing disaster at Fukishima.

This disaster has world wide implications and needs to be monitored by the worlds independent press and the top nuclear experts from around the world.

There is too little reliable information regarding the progress and status of the stabilization and clean up of this disaster.

TEPCO and the nuclear industry was not forthcoming in the initial days of this disaster. They can not be trusted to be open and honest now. There needs to be independent verification of the status and progress.
