After hearing Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo co-founder Jeremy Grantham’s keynote on Tuesday at the 2018 Morningstar annual conference in Chicago, there is no doubt RIAs in the audience were persuaded to utilize sustainable investing methods. Grantham, who said 98% of his net worth was invested in or committed to environmental foundations, gave a sobering speech on where the world was at in its “decay,” and what was needed to change it. “We’ve created a toxic world,” he said.
Aside from highlighting the research on global warming, Grantham illustrated several dangers specifically to agriculture, including severe loss of top soil in the U.S. Midwest due to increased downpours that wash it away, as well as the problems caused by pesticides — rivers polluted with runoff and flying insects killed off, leaving crops with fewer pollinators.
“We only have 30 to 70 good agricultural producing years left” at the rate we are going, he said, adding that the world is losing 1% of collective soil and 1% of arable land a year.
Some other findings he cited:
The good news is clean energy, specifically solar and wind, will be much cheaper in the next 10 years than even the operating costs of coal and nuclear power. Battery costs will drop as well, making electric cars cheaper to build, run and maintain. The problem, Grantham said, is carbon will continue to increase even as green measures are taken and fossil fuel use drops, and we can only afford a rise of 3 degrees celsius.
Grantham’s own GMO Climate Change Fund is made up of 34.58% clean energy stocks, 5.44% smart grid, 9.30% copper, 20.31% energy efficiency, 23.18% agriculture, 4.93% water and 2.25% cash. He destroyed the argument that portfolios that don’t include gas and oil stocks will have weaker performance as he showed three time periods and how portfolios fared when various sectors were eliminated, and ex oil and gas portfolios had less impact than many other sectors.
“The assumption has been if you divest of oil, returns will be hurt, but that’s not the truth,” he said.

I’m not entirely clean on how price drops on what the writer calls ‘clean energy’ offsets all the others hit that is coming down the pipe our way, but w/e.
Funny though, he uses the term, ‘clean energy’ to refer to solar and wind. Why not simply call it what it is, electricity? That is what solar and wind produce after all.
Btw, I buy ‘clean energy’ too, for my place of residence, but no one calls it that. We all call it hydro-electricity. And its price goes in one direction, upwards. The fact that is happens to be ‘clean’ has had no effect on its upward price over the years. And even if batteries do get a little cheaper, that will do very little, since batteries, expensive as they are, are only a tiny subset of the cost of automobile, or EV dependency. The costs of roads, bridges, enforcement, signalling, insurance and so on, will only continue to rise. Cheaper batteries wont do a damn thing to reduce any of those costs. So, not sure what this guy is smoking, but it must be pretty good stuff…
On the one hand, its a toxic world, but on the other, solar’s cost might drop a few cents a KW/H and batteries for that EV you don’t yet own, might get a bit cheaper(soon). Hoo-ray.

No, MM, I do not take pleasure in suffering, I just see what is coming, and where it is most likely to be worse. That you do not like what is coming does not change the fact that it will come. You can prep to ease your pain or deny. Your choice. I made mine.

Russia 5 – Saudi Arabia 0
What a great day for Russia, Russians, Putin, and the world! Russia couldn’t possibly have asked for a better result. The Russians beat the crap out of the Saudis. Russia wins the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup opening game in Moscow earning 3 points and a positive 5 goal difference. I couldn’t be happier right now. I am going to troll the board’s imperialists like crazy for a day and rub this amazing triumph on their faces. GO RUSSIA! I want to give the Russian people my congratulations on what must be one of the happiest days for them ever. They should be really proud to be hosting the world today! Every single person I talked with today is happy for the Russians except this board’s delusional exceptionalist who are so frustrated and unhappy that they can’t suffer anyone else having a good day!

“Reason 3: Because I understand that a primary goal of the internationalist, globalist, anti-sovereignty and New World Order crowd is to diminish U.S. economic performance dramatically, and this includes ending the reserve status and petro-status of the dollar in order to make way for a single global currency unit dictated by a single global economic administrator.”
The ‘Great Leveling’ I have been talking about.
“…there is indeed a global war brewing between major powers, but that this war will be fought primarily with financial weapons, not nukes. I also summarized my position that this war will be engineered by globalists deliberately to provide cover for something they call the “great economic reset.”… The U.S. has only two major points of leverage in a trade war. First, the U.S. dollar’s world reserve status, which I have already addressed as not a point of leverage at all unless the Fed continues stimulus indefinitely. Second, the U.S. consumer. … Without a massive resurrection of American manufacturing and production, we enter into a trade war with little ammunition because we remain dependent on foreign production and goods, while other nations like China can easily expand into alternative markets and retain their own production capabilities.”
Note: …”other nations like China can easily expand into alternative markets and retain their own production capabilities.” Hmm I think I said that before also.

If Grantham’s GMO Climate Change Fund is invested in agriculture, 23 percent, the fund is definitely investing in fossil fuels.
You cannot have modern agricultural practices and techniques without oil and coal.
You need industry to have modern ag equipment and that means oil and coal.
An investment in copper also translates to the use of fossil fuels to have copper wire.
Electricity is what makes it happen.
In Chicago, no less, the home of the onions, and in Illinois, an ag powerhouse nonpareil.
Another green hypocrite who doesn’t know if he is afoot or horseback.

More intellectually weak understanding of the systematic nature of the global economy. We are interconnect so much as to preclude some abstract world order crowd from controlling this self-organizing and self-adapting economic system. We are not in control of this process.
“Without a massive resurrection of American manufacturing and production, we enter into a trade war with little ammunition because we remain dependent on foreign production and goods, while other nations like China can easily expand into alternative markets and retain their own production capabilities.”
Please, the US is in the top 3 manufactures and exporters in the world. Its economy is in the top two. Let’s keep things in perspective and get the emotional hate out of the discussion. China cannot easily expand into alternative markets. All markets currently are saturated and the global economy already unstable. What a joke to think that China can decouple from the US where so much of its manufactured products go. The same is true for Europe. You guys are stuck with the US just as the US is with you that is until we all fail together.

You’re point being? And in what is the usa getting worse? McDonalds hamburger getting smaller?
>> America imported US$2.409 trillion worth of goods from around the globe in 2017
Yes, that’s the curse if you “own” the global reserve currency. You have no choice but to run a trade deficit. But despair not, once the $ is replaced as reserve currency by a basket of $, EUR, etc, you can be certain the US will be back as a major exporter.
>> The USA doesn’t make anything that the rest of the world needs
That of course is not true. The main export of the US is $$, which for some reason a plenty of other nations desperately want. They even provide all kinds of goods to the US, just to get $$. Pathetic, those nations that practically sell their shirt, just to get $$.

Juan, I couldn’t sleep over this one and had to look it up.
US export 2017: 2.3G$ (G = Giga = 10^9)
US import 2017: 2.9G$
The trade deficit is small compared to the total trade volume. Apparently the US makes lots of stuff other nations want.
Is that your southern sloppiness that you would just make your arguments up instead of looking it up?

A funny story BTW, I just recently visited a small rural town in mexico. It was fun to see all them Mexican teenagers who barley can do basic math with their latest cellphones. So much for “need” and “want”.
Probably about the same in your Uruguay. Although Uruguay is called the Switzerland of South America. Apparently because a lot of swiss immigrants made it a bit cleaner and smarter than your generic south America banana republic. I hope I can visit one day. I once even inquired about studying at the university in Montevideo. Who knows, maybe I get a chance and can still do it. I sure would love to.

The USA has many universities that are better than the ones in Uruguay. While the primary and secondary education system in Uruguay is superior to the American one, for an American to go to college down there makes no sense.

What you mean? Im not interested in fun. I’m interested in country. And looking at google map I think Uruguay is very interesting and pretty. Especial the rural places far from Montevideo. If it’s one thing I don’t like it’s a lot of people (my prime complaint about Switzerland, which is grossly overpopulated). Uruguay seems empty.
Studying an advanced degree seems a good opportunity to stay in the country a while longer, not just as a tourist, while still learning something.
