Fukushima Radiation Has Contaminated The Entire Pacific Ocean (And It’s Going To Get Worse)

Fukushima Radiation Has Contaminated The Entire Pacific Ocean (And It’s Going To Get Worse) thumbnail

The nuclear disaster has contaminated the world’s largest ocean in only five years and it’s still leaking 300 tons of radioactive waste every day.

An energy map provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows the intensity of the tsunami in the Pacific Ocean caused by the magnitude 8.9 earthquake which struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Thousands of people fled their homes along the Pacific coast of North and South America on Friday as a tsunami triggered by Japan's massive earthquake reached the region but appeared to spare it from major damage. What was the most dangerous nuclear disaster in world history? Most people would say the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine, but they’d be wrong. In 2011, an earthquake, believed to be an aftershock of the 2010 earthquake in Chile, created a tsunami that caused a meltdown at the TEPCO nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan. Three nuclear reactors melted down and what happened next was the largest release of radiation into the water in the history of the world. Over the next three months, radioactive chemicals, some in even greater quantities than Chernobyl, leaked into the Pacific Ocean. However, the numbers may actually be much higher as Japanese official estimates have been proven by several scientists to be flawed in recent years.

If that weren’t bad enough, Fukushima continues to leak an astounding 300 tons of radioactive waste into the Pacific Ocean every day. It will continue do so indefinitely as the source of the leak cannot be sealed as it is inaccessible to both humans and robots due to extremely high temperatures.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Fukushima has contaminated the entire Pacific Ocean in just five years. This could easily be the worst environmental disaster in human history and it is almost never talked about by politicians, establishment scientists, or the news. It is interesting to note that TEPCO is a subsidiary of General Electric (also known as GE), one of the largest companies in the world, which has considerable control over numerous news corporations and politicians alike. Could this possibly explain the lack of news coverage Fukushima has received in the last five years? There is also evidence that GE knew about the poor condition of the Fukushima reactors for decades and did nothing. This led 1,400 Japanese citizens to sue GE for their role in the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Even if we can’t see the radiation itself, some parts of North America’s western coast have been feeling the effects for years. Not long after Fukushima, fish in Canada began bleeding from their gills, mouths, and eyeballs. This “disease” has been ignored by the government and has decimated native fish populations, including the North Pacific herring. Elsewhere in Western Canada, independent scientists have measured a 300% increase in the level of radiation. According to them, the amount of radiation in the Pacific Ocean is increasing every year. Why is this being ignored by the mainstream media? It might have something to do with the fact that the US and Canadian governments have banned their citizens from talking about Fukushima so “people don’t panic.”

Further south in Oregon, USA, starfish began losing legs and then disintegrating entirely when Fukushima radiation arrived there in 2013. Now, they are dying in record amounts, putting the entire oceanic ecosystem in that area at risk. However, government officials say Fukushima is not to blame even though radiation in Oregon tuna tripled after Fukushima. In 2014, radiation on California beaches increased by 500 percent. In response, government officials said that the radiation was coming from a mysterious “unknown” source and was nothing to worry about.

However, Fukushima is having a bigger impact than just the West coast of North America. Scientists are now saying that the Pacific Ocean is already radioactive and is currently at least 5-10 times more radioactive than when the US government dropped numerous nuclear bombs in the Pacific during and after World War II. If we don’t start talking about Fukushima soon, we could all be in for a very unpleasant surprise.

Anyone find it suspicious that this article is presented by a company called ‘Peak Oil’? Seems a little fishy, or should I say oily to me. Perhaps trying to scare people away from other energy sources so as to sell, oh I dont know, maybe oil? Kind of like the tobacco companies stating that their research on tobacco use is safe.

  2. Chris S on Sun, 2nd Oct 2016 10:55 pm

There is a reason that the major news sites don’t run this story, it is complete and utter nonsense. 300 tons per day for 5 years is 300x365x5 = 547,500 tons of Nuclear waste. A quick trip to the nuclear energy institute website (nei.org) and we find this:
“Over the past four decades, the entire industry has produced 76,430 metric tons of used nuclear fuel”.
No research at all, just scare tactics to try and scare the people into believing a disaster is impending.

This article is such a scam. wikipedia has way better info than this article. I am a radiological worker on usa carriers and go inside the reactors everyday and the exposures are so low at fukushima, unless you are swimming in the pools at the plant. You get more radiation standing at the beach all day then the effects of fukushima. You get more radiation from eating a banana than fukushima. People are obsessed with disasters, it’s nearly impossible to talk people out of one.

This article and story is so stupid. I was intrigued by the colorful and scary “radiation” photo. Based on the fact that the image came NOAA Tsunami Research and shows the wave heights of the tsunami, I am guessing the rest of this article is bogus as well.

The simple way to eliminate nuclear accidents is quit being Socialist about nuclear power. Have the nuclear plants buy insurance on the open market instead of forcing the taxpayers to pay for accidents. No other power plant in existence allows the owners to retain all profits while UNASSOCIATED TAXPAYERS pick all costs for fuel, insurance, clean up, and disposal.

Imagine if the US Government told the taxpayers they had to pick up the bill for BP’s Macondo Oil Spill.

Let’s wait another five years, looking at deformities, and illness to beach goers, maybe we will say there’s a problem with the water in the ocean, which will affect the fish we eat. DAH!
    GE….enough said.

Howdy flatsum, when radioactive isotopes for example such as cesium-137, strontium-90, or uranium-235 have entered the environment do to the loss of their protective containment, they can then find there way into the food chain. These radioactive isotopes become serious threats when they are ingested into living organisms. These ingested elements then become what is referred to as internal emitters. They are absorbed into the tissues of the organism and due to the proximity of the decaying particles to the tissue they are absorbed into they will then due damage to that tissue. Bio-accumulation of these radioactive particles occurs when one organism ingests the contaminated organism. It will then proceed up the food chain to what ever the highest level that ingests these contaminated organisms until eventually the food chain collapses due to the destructive nature of the radioactive damage that is occurring as long as whatever the particular decay rate of the ingested isotope may be. The bad thing about nuclear is the length of time it can be dangerous to all carbon based life. The nuclear profiteers and their apologists spend a lot of money and time explaining how safe this stuff is as long as it is kept in protective containment. What is happening more and more and likely to continue is that it is escaping containment and entering the biosphere. Once out of containment it is difficult if not impossible to be recovered. I hope I have helped you to understand that you do not want this material to get inside of you!

    This article is utterly silly.

Fukushima is surely a very serious issue but you can be 100% sure that fossil fuels are causing a lot more harm than this accident. Coal power plants are emitting enormous amounts of toxins including mercury that gets into the food chain. Nowadays we have to be careful what fish we eat not so much because of Fukushima but far more because of other sources of pollution including mercury.

This article would have been more credible had it included actual information of science studies with proper measurements of radioactive isotope contamination.

I just read this news also:

In the half decade since a nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan, melted down, scientists have found no levels of nuclear radiation along the California coast that would be harmful to humans.

Kai Vetter, a UC Berkeley professor of nuclear engineering, assembled a team of students and colleagues soon after a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami five years ago Friday heavily damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station on Japan’s Pacific coast, allowing radiation to seep into the atmosphere. Their mission was to test for the presence of harmful radiation that might find its way to California.
“When it became clear that there were major releases of radiation there, we became very serious about what the effects could be here,” Vetter said. “We started to set up tools and instruments here to see the radiation coming across the Pacific.”
Over time, his team found nothing alarming, Vetter said.
“Most people who make cross-country flights choose to be exposed to a larger amount of radiation than what they’d be exposed to from Fukushima’s effects here,” he said.

After reading the prognostication of ALL the math wizards above, I cna understand why ignorance is the common disease in America.

Radiation is CUMULATIVE. Plankton eat diatoms. Sardines eat plankton. Sardines are eaten by salmon. Salmon are eaten by humans. This is an addition problem, not a multiplication problem. Simplified as there are many other in-between consumers of the radioactivity.

How much is too much? Answer: One particle is all it takes to damage a cell and cause cancer. One particle. Just like one bullet can kill you.

Ignorance is rife in the world today. The human species deserves to go extinct and soon.

Hello Peter M, I have studied the consequences of nuclear energy now since the Fukushima event first occurred. I have responded to a few posts regarding this article here on Peak Oil. I have not bothered to take the time to read this article. If I were to guess I would say it is just one of many controlled opposition productions that are released periodically to be easily refuted as to the accuracy of the information presented. There is never enough conversation regarding the inherent dangers of nuclear energy. By this I mean the way this material is a threat to all carbon base life. When it enters the biosphere it begins a destructive process to our food chain. As long as it can enter the food chain at any level it will bio-accumulate. It initially was my fear that it would reach the west coast and I would ingest these radioisotopes when I was out surfing. It became clear to me after studying the physics involved with these heavy elements that that would be a low probability to exposure. What I emphasize to everyone is that exposure to radioactive material is dangerous in a cumulative nature. The nuclear profiteers and their apologists have always presented the danger of radiation as an external exposure scenario. And external exposures generally require high levels of radiation to be immediate health concerns. These type of exposures have occurred and are the headline stories. The real danger though is when these materials enter your body and do not pass through but are absorbed due to being analogues to common minerals that the body needs to function. This the reason you would want to consume iodine tablets if there was a threat of absorbing the radioactive iodine isotope. By taking the iodine you are trying to keep your body from absorbing the radioactive iodine by flooding your system with the safe and stable iodine. I have learned that human exposure is most likely going to be the result of a contaminated food chain. Wherever the food chain has been exposed that is where it will increase your odds of ingesting these materials. It would be very foolish to eat any plant or animal products that were taken from anywhere near The Fukushima catastrophe. The problem at Fukushima is they are not able to contain the contamination and it is slowly spreading and increasing the exposure to the food chain. You mention the dangers of burning fossil fuels. That is definitely the most immediate health concern facing Humanity. And if you have studied the topic of “peak oil”, you would understand that due to 300 years of easy and abundant energy, the human population has exploded exponentially. We have now exhausted the easy and abundant energy and will face a population collapse. I posted this link here just a few posts back but I will post again for you. It is the most informative website available regarding the Fukushima event.

People, the Fukushima radiation disaster is the worst disaster in the history of the world known to us and you are seriously oblivious to this reality? Get your head out of the sand, put your cell phones down, stop watching TV and LOOK at the disaster all around you. Wake up!

To those who believe that this article is bogus and there is nothing to worry about:

I say either you have got your head stuck in the sand so you are not aware of the monstrosity of this issue or you were hired specifically to go on the internet to throw out more lies to confuse the issue and help cover up the truth. In fact, if you feel there is no danger and all this Fukushima radiation scare is bogus, put your money where your mouth is. You should spend more time on the beach and in the ocean. Show us how safe it is. Eat specifically Pacific ocean fish but hey, any ocean fish will do because the radiation has already made it in all bodies of water on Earth. Then do let us know how you are doing healthwise not just today but in 5, 10, 20 years. Remember, radiation is cummulative.

If you don’t work in the radiation field, please don’t make uneducated and ignorant public comments. Do some research and actually look into the topic. That would be the responsible thing to do.

A 2010 earthquake in Chile then triggering the Great East Japan Earthquake close to months or a year later? Come on!

The Fukushima Daichi Disaster began occurring at 2:46 PM, with a 9.0 mag earthquake, “Great East Japan Earthquake”, with aftershocks (>7.0) lasting into April 11.

The earthquake then generated the tsunami which hit Fukushima beginning at 3:46 PM, with subsequent waves following (source: http://www.world-nuclear.org/information-library/safety-and-security/safety-of-plants/fukushima-accident.aspx)

People who doubt the severity of the Fukushima radioactive contamination should consider the facts. Each of the 3 reactors at Fukushima are 3 times the size of the single reactor that exploded at Chernobyl. There were massive spent nuclear fuel fires at Fukushima Reactor 4. Fukushima reactor 3 used MOX plutonium enhanced fuels. The 3 molten reactor cores are STILL NOT CONTAINED! Nuclear fission continues on; out of control. The deadly cancer causing life killing fission products are washing unimpeded into the Pacific every second of every minute of every hour of every day since 3.11.11. The total volume of radioactive materials that have entered the ocean and atmosphere from Fukushima FAR EXCEEDS Chernobyl. Keep eating Pacific seafoods if you doubt these FACTS and perhaps we can study your tumor laden body for science in the future. Beware the pro nuclear shills everywhere in this comments section. They get paid to downplay the dangers of nuclear. The nuclear energy industry spent $1.4 BILLION on PR/Marketing in 2014 alone. There is no such thing as “nuclear safety.” Nuclear reactors are by definition extremely dangerous complex machines which operate in a barely in control manner under routine operations. Reactors use fission to split atoms. Reactors can, and will, explode like Fukushima reactor #3 and Chernobyl. Read ENENEWS.COM to learn the truth. Ban Reactors Forever.

Some people call the article bogus because the nuclear waste being leaked at 300 ton a day as claimed by the article amounts to more than the total nuclear waste from the N power plant of the world. —- Let me explain this to you: one part of pure nuclear waste maybe mixed into 10 parts or more of surrounding materials to create a larger amount of nuclear waste. So wake up, just one particle, which is <1/1,000,000 of 1 oz can cause cancer if it goes into your body.

I am proud to see Yahoo standing up to wake up humanity. There is nothing right about nuclear anything and the pacific is ruined. Sailors that have sailed across it for years report that everything is dead. They saw one whale with a big tumor on its back humping along. Nicola Tesla could pull electricity out of the thin air. Enough to power a car and your house. The big shots couldn’t figure out how to make money off of it back in 1930. There is no need for this nonsense. I was living in Japan at the time. All the buildings I owned 100 miles from Fukushima were seriously structurally damaged and had to be abandoned. The residents wisely wore masks to try to avoid contamination but it is everywhere on land east of Nagano. Most residents still say it is unwise to go out without a filter or to drive with the car windows down. The comments above about the quantity of radioactive material released, seeking to reduce or challenge the dire nature of the effects of this disaster, do not take into account the difference between normal controlled use of radioactive fuels and the wildly uncontrolled production of a meltdown times three. Those meltdowns will be active for eighty years and the current extreme domestic and worldwide contamination is just at it’s beginning. Deny it if you wish but I stopped eating produce from Japan immediately and don’t touch Pacific seafood on my life. Enjoy it if you have the ability to ignore this on-going ultra-disaster.

And you worry about the little bit of radiation. Americans never know and will know the key points. Always talk, talk, talk and hot air comes out, maybe this is another reason for global warming.

Else, why the big carmakers are pushing a lot to follow closely the WCMS audit.
    Some thing to think:
    – sand for iron casting or investment casting is coming from coastal reagons, mainly Australia, South Africa, China,…
    – many car products especially engine parts are casted
    – what would somebody say, if he would check his car and found some radiation, same as in the 90s after a nuclear test in the Bikini area, radiocative material contaminated the sand in the northern regions of Australia, one of the best area for casting sand.
