In the 2018 Annual Letter event of the Gates Foundation, American entrepreneur and Microsoft founder Bill Gates chose a tough question to answer. Does saving lives contribute to over-population?
Gates took up the question asked by many. As people get healthier and live longer, will feeding everybody without damaging the environment be possible?
Gates showed viewers a chart, giving them a glimpse into the world’s population growth over several hundred years. He acknowledged the massive growth in the number of people: “At first glance, this is a bit scary.”
But his discovery is fascinating. When the quality of health increases, more people choose to have fewer children.
“This effect is very, very dramatic,” Gates explained. “We find that in every country in the world, this is repeated. The population rate goes down as we improve health.” And that might answer the question.

The utopian future of everyone being wealthy enough to only have two children has a dark consequence. Every individual gets about ten random mutations at conception. Most are neutral, rarely they are so bad that the child is not viable. But between these extremes are mutations that have minor deleterious effects. In the old days (including hunter gatherer times) most women would have about ten offspring in their life, and 8/10 of them would die. This helped remove the minor damaging mutations from the population. In utopia where every woman only has two children and modern medicine is used to ensure they live to reproduce the minor mutations will increase in abundance every generation. This leads to a genomic meltdown eventually where fertility and viability suddenly hits a cliff. Modeling has showed in humans it would take around 500 years to reach this point. Peak oil and a civilisational collapse might ironically save us from this fate.

Climate change will negatively impact a lot of infrastructure and agriculture built around the current oil dependent system. But that system is going away regardless of climate change, so we can’t get too excited about the negative short term impacts of climate change. In a few tens of thousands of years when the next glacial cycle fails to start then humanity will be way better off due to the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Our language and thinking are so limited. Nothing is purely good or bad, but produces a cascade of consequences that bring costs and benefits at different times and places.

The key to stopping population growth, and eventually reverting it, is to reduce the number of births. Our first goal should be to reduce the annual number of births by around 80 million to stabilize the global population level. This can be very easily done by helping the poor women of the world to avoid unwanted pregnancies. But, hey, why make sense? Better to listen to a computer programmer and businessman’s advice on something he knows crap about. He must know what he is talking about since he has a lot of money! Right, Imaginary Neuron?

The Earth has experienced a short period of “relative stability” over the last few millenia, which were an exception to the rule, but still included an unquantifiable amount of changes on a constant basis. A “stable environment” is a common human myth that has never existed!

Forgive my topicality but no, saving lives does not lead to overpopulation because we’re already there. By about 7 billion some say that study these things. And Shazzbot talks of the minor effects of short term climate change but fails to see the consequences of acidified oceans and massive methane releases. These have been used before by Gaia before to delouse the place. We are the bed bugs and she is the Orkin person. Can’t prepare for what she has in store us and our egos won’t allow it to begin with.

I push the point because when we use the expression “save lives” we push out of mind that they will die later and we push out of mind our own mortality. Bill should have remained a programmer. The idea that monstrous population growth is caused by unhealthy people is ridiculous.
Real reasons for third world birth explosion:
1. zero awareness and/or interest in ecological problems
2. having many children is a 3rd world pension plan
3. women have nothing else to do than being a mother
4. absence of preservatives
5. in the third world there is no prevalent consumer lifestyle like in the West, where children are seen as hindrances for world trips, careers, cars and what not. Children are postponed which often leads to no children at all.
6. Western self-defeating Christian attitude that sees the (alleged) misery in the third world somehow as a first world problem, of which leftist-globalist Bill Gates is an important exponent, encouraging the expectation in the third world that whitey will come to the rescue regardless.
