BP’s Oil Blog

The mainstream media is also reporting that so-called exerts are saying the amount of oil being released is far more than the 5,000 barrels thought to be leaking in the ocean on a daily basis by BP. Experts? How is anyone an expert in oil leaking from the ocean floor at about a mile below the surface? There is no such thing as an expert in this, which is the reason why BP is having so much trouble plugging the leak, and you can be sure others in the industry are giving them input on the matter as well, as it has a negative impact on the industry as a whole.

There may not be such a thing as an expert, yet, in bottom of ocean oil disasters like this, but there are experts at estimating flow rates based on video, in fact there is established software (particle image velocimetry)

BP so far has changed their story from 1,000 bpd to 5,000 bpd to somewhat “more than” 5,000 bpd but independent scientists have estimated it as far above 5,000bpd. Telling also is this quote from another story published right here at peakoil.com:

“.BP, and the Obama administration, have said they don’t want to take the measurements for fear of interfering with efforts to stop the leaks. That decision, however, runs counter to BP’s own regional plan for dealing with offshore leaks. “In the event of a significant release of oil,” the 583-page plan says on Page 2, “an accurate estimation of the spill’s total volume . . . is essential in providing preliminary data to plan and initiate cleanup operations.”

“Legal experts said that not having a credible official estimate of the leak’s size provides another benefit for BP: The amount of oil spilled is certain to be key evidence in the court battles that are likely to result from the disaster. The size of the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, for example, was a significant factor that the jury considered when it assessed damages against Exxon.”
